In the end, the unit gave the Lancers a shot at the state title.
After seeing a 10-0 lead evaporate, North Scott scored in overtime to go up 17-10 before the defense stopped Cedar Rapids Xavier from doing the same, setting off a wild celebrate nearly 12 hours after the first game of the day kicked off.
Carter Markham accounted for all 10 yards in the extra session for North Scott. He had a 2-yard run before hitting Oliver Hughes on a pass on second-and-goal that set up a 7-yard TD strike to Parker Ruth.
Markham showed excellent ball-speed in delivering the game-winning score to Ruth.
In Cedar Rapids Xavier’s turn in overtime, the Saints were pushed back to start. They ran a nice double-reverse but on fourth-and-goal, Jaxon Rexroth Jaxon Rexroth 6'2" | 190 lbs | ATH Xavier | 2021 IA ’s pass to the end zone was swatted away.
Markham finished 8 of 13 passing for 53 yards and a score, adding 64 yards and a TD on the ground. Darnell Butler also ran for 64 yards.
Rexroth completed 12 of 17 for 87 and ran for 104 yards. Jax Lux had 59 yards and a touchdown for Cedar Rapids Xavier, which could not overcome three turnovers.
Xavier tied it after scoring 10 points in the fourth including a game-ending drive that chewed up the final nine minutes of the clock. The possession covered 64 yards on 16 plays with Lincoln Oakley booting through a 33-yard field goal as time expired to force overtime.
Rexroth displayed incredible patience and poise on the drive. He mixed in quick-hitting passes with equally well-timed run plays for himself and his backs.
North Scott will be playing in the title round for the first time in school history. After knocking off one unbeaten in Xavier, they will try to do it again when they face Harlan next Friday night.
