The 6 foot 1 – and 195-pound safety out of Gateway High School is taking his talents to LSU over Penn State, Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson, and others. Derrick is the fourth safety to commit and LSU now has the top 2 ranked safeties in the nation. He is also the third-highest recruit for LSU’s 2021 recruiting class. It has been more than a decade since LSU has gotten a recruit from Pennsylvania. Derrick has the size and speed to play at the highest level. He shows great instincts and physicality. His ability to make guys miss with the ball in his hands is so smooth. This past Friday night unfortunately marked his last high school game as Gateway came up short in a tough loss in the second round of the playoffs. Derrick was crucial to Gateway’s success over the last 4 years. He was a two-way starter, as he played running back on offense as well as safety. He broke the school career touchdown record as he had over 75 touchdowns. His presence was known in the secondary and it showed. During his four years, Gateway’s defense allowed an average of 13 points per game, with his freshman year being the highest with an average of 21 points per game. As his high school football career is officially over, Derrick can now focus on the next chapter of his life, that is being a Tiger.
