The St. Louis area held a stranglehold on the top spot in the state’s largest classification for the previous four years, with Kirkwood winning in 2016, CBC claiming back to back titles in 2017 and 2018 and then De Smet breaking through with an undefeated season in 2019.
On Saturday, it was Raymore-Peculiar that shut out undefeated De Smet 23-0 in Jefferson City to claim the fourth state championship in school history and give the Kansas City side of the state its first title since Blue Springs South won it in 2015.
Here’s a quick look at some of the standout performers on both sides from Saturday’s title game…
RAYMORE-PECULIAR (12-2)
Jaidyn Doss, WR-ATH, 6-1, 195, Class of 2023
Just a sophomore, Doss had a dominant day against a De Smet defensive squad loaded with Division I talent. He racked up 190 yards and three touchdowns on just 10 rushing attempts — scoring on runs of 43, 64 and 28 yards. A three-sport athlete (football, basketball and track) who reported an offer from Kansas in early October, you can expect to watch Doss’s recruiting blow up sooner rather than later.
Philip Fager, RB, 6-0, 185, Class of 2021
Fager was the Panthers’ go-to guy on offense for much of the season and had another strong game against De Smet. Fager racked up 112 total yards, gaining 76 yards on 19 carries (4.0 yards per) and 36 receiving yards on three catches.
Conrad Hawley Conrad Hawley 6'6" | 220 lbs | QB Raymore Peculiar | 2021 State MO , QB, 6-6, 220, Class of 2021
Hawley had a week he’ll never forget after picking up his first Power-5 scholarship offer from Kansas and then leading his team to a state championship in his final high school game. Hawley didn’t put up big numbers against De Smet – he completed just four of 11 passes for 47 yards and was sacked five times – but the only numbers that mattered were the ones on the scoreboard.
Demetrios Walker II, OLB-DE, 6-2, 190, Class of 2021
An undersized defensive end/outside linebacker, Walker recorded four tackles and two of his team’s five sacks. He’s lightning quick off the edge and shows a good ability to bend and get to the quarterback.
DE SMET (6-1)
Chris Skiljan, DE-OLB, 6-1, 225, Class of 2022
There weren’t a lot of bright spots for the Spartans, but the play of emerging junior linebacker Skiljan was certainly one. Skiljan recorded eight tackles and a game-high three sacks. Skiljan finished his junior season with 65 tackles and five sacks in just seven games.
Mekhi Wingo Mekhi Wingo 6'1" | 290 lbs | DL De Smet | 2021 State MO , DT, 6-1, 290, Class of 2021
The No. 4 prospect in the Missouri Class of 2021 rankings, Wingo has been a dominant force during his final two high school seasons and made his mark again in the championship game. The University of Missouri recruit recorded six tackles, two sacks and forced a fumble. Wingo finished his senior season with 54 tackles and five tackles in seven games.
