Scottsdale Christian had 3 defensive TD’s in the first quarter, which has Scottsdale Prep playing desperate from the start. They were able to rattle the Scottsdale Prep playmakers early to come out as 2A Verde Region Champs. Take a look at 5 defensive players who played well on Friday night:
Defensive MVP: Jake Brugman, DB/WR, Scottsdale Christian (C/O 2022)
Brugman had 2 INT’s including a pick 6 and was a monster all around for the Scottsdale Christian defense. He also had numerous PBU’s and was excellent in coverage as nobody was able to get over the top of him. He is a long, lanky build and showed a very good nose for the football. He did a good job of high pointing his 2nd interception, and almost took that one to the house as well after breaking about 4 tackles. He lined up at safety and showed a good football IQ to stay in his zone without getting baited up. He had a solid play when he recognized there was nobody getting vertical, and flew up to break up a pass on a dig route on 3rd down. Brugman has a ball hawk ability for 2A ball, and his long and lanky build at 6’1″ 160lbs helps him win contested toss ups, and will be a solid player next year as well.
Braden Wales, DL, Scottsdale Christian (C/O 2022)
Wales blocked a punt in the first quarter and a Scottsdale Christian player fell on it in the endzone for a TD. Wales was a mismatch all game, as he was consistently forcing Scottsdale Prep QB Oscar Frias outside the pocket all night. I was always seeing him in the backfield blowing up plays. He assisted on many gang tackles, and showed excellent pursuit on Frias. He forced Frias into throwing multiple INT’s, and was clearly a player Scottsdale Prep wanted to avoid from the beginning. Wales has solid position versatility as he is a massive kid listed at 6’7″ 202lbs, and has much room to put on weight.
Davis Klassen, DB/WR, Scottsdale Christian (C/O 2021)
Klassen locked up the Scottsdale Prep receivers and had a pick 6 where he hit good top level speed to blow past multiple Scottsdale Prep defenders to take it to the house. Klassen was solid as he was able to track the football well and come up with that INT as well as numerous PBU’s. He can be a solid striker when he wants to turn it on as well, as he showed a few glimpses of laying some hat. Klassen was a big part of the stellar Scottsdale Christian defensive play, and will look to carry that momentum into the playoffs.
Will Chambers, OL/LB, Scottsdale Christian (C/O 2021)
Chambers was a stud on both sides of the ball on Friday night. He did an excellent job of stopping the run game and consistently meeting the ball carrier at the LOS for no gain and TFL’s. He is a smart football player, and displayed very good play recognition and instincts. He was able to sack Frias on a bootleg and showed solid speed and pursuit to chase him down for the sack. He did a good job of shedding blocks as well which was clutch in his performance to plug up developing holes. Chambers is a leader for Scottsdale Christian, and reliable, disciplined player.
Logan Dunlap, DE/LB, Scottsdale Prep (C/O 2021)
Dunlap was the only positive side of Scottsdale Prep’s defense. He showed excellent pursuit and play recognition, as he was the only one to put pressure on SCA QB Ben Tobin. He had multiple TFL’s and showed an impressive block shedding ability. He was able to disengage off blocks to quickly make the tackle. He had solid lateral vision and is long enough to stretch out and make tackles laterally as he has a solid build at 6’2″ 190lbs. Dunlap has good position versatility as he can play as a down DE or a standup OLB. He has room to put on weight, and could possible transition into a D3 OLB.
