With a meeting against Bergen Catholic lurking this weekend, St. Peter’s Prep, in its first game back from a COVID-19 shutdown, suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 4-1.
The potential for an undefeated season and the state’s top team is no more for the Marauders.
Myles Thomason Myles Thomason 5'9" | RB Seton Hall Prep | 2022 NJ scored on a 26-yard run early in the game and then scored on a 25-yard connection from Jaden Craig in overtime. Thomason took a screen pass to the end zone right after the Pirates stopped St. Peter’s Prep on a two-point conversion. Nick Conforti kicked the extra point, and the celebration was on for Seton Hall Prep.
St. Peter’s Prep struck first in overtime after quarterback Tahjamell Bullock scored on a 6-yard run. In an interesting move, the top-ranked team elected to go for a two-point conversion instead of kicking the extra point. Bullock was stopped inches from the goal line, which set up an opportunity for Seton Hall Prep to get the victory.
Thomason and Craig made St. Peter’s Prep pay right away, and the monumental upset was complete.
Craig threw three touchdowns, the others to Nick Dunneman for 12 yards and Jack Larsen for 25 yards. St. Peter’s Prep trailed 19-7 at halftime but rallied to tie the game behind Bullock.
The Virginia Tech quarterback commit threw a 1-yard TD to Zyeair Miller and then scored on a 1-yard run himself to tie the game at 19. Bullock was tremendous on the ground all game, finishing with 143 yards on 25 carries and three scores, the other a 36-yard scamper in the first quarter.
The Pirates improved to 3-3, now winners of three in a row following an 0-3 start to the season – albeit to three ranked squads in Delbarton, St. Joseph (Mont.) and DePaul. Seton Hall Prep defeated Union City and Pope John the last two games.
Paul Lefkowitz Paul Lefkowitz 5'10" | 215 lbs | RB St. Peter's Prep | 2022 NJ added to St. Peter’s Prep rushing attack with 138 yards on 16 carries, and Samuel Slade ran six times for 48 yards.
Thomason ran 13 times for 63 yards and the score, Craig threw for 159 yards and the three TDs and Dunneman caught seven balls for 82 yards and the score. Larsen made three catches for 52 yards and the TD.
St. Peter’s Prep had two extra-point attempts blocked.
Seton Hall Prep had a two-point pass attempt fail, and an extra-point kick failed as well.
The result really shifts Saturday’s matchup between St. Peter’s Prep and Bergen Catholic. Both teams surprisingly sit with one loss. They looked like the two clear best teams in the state a month ago, but anything can happen in football, and that proved true again on Monday afternoon.
