The game was back and forth before Ironton was able to pull the game out in the late in the fourth quarter. Here are some players stood out to me during the game.
Ironton
Reid Carrico Reid Carrico 6'3" | 230 lbs | LB Ironton | 2021 State OH RB/LB Ironton (C/O 2021)- Carrico is just a flat out monster. At 6’3 235 very few have the speed and movement skills that Carrico put on display Saturday night. The part the makes his size speed combo especially impressive is how physical he plays. Ohio State defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs must be very excited to get Carrico down in Columbus and in the Woody Hayes to give him a test run in the Scarlet and Grey. Offensively Carrico rushed 28 times for 195 yards and 2 touchdowns and also added 3 catches and 39 yards and a touchdown through the air. Tackling is akin to tackling a runaway bull. In spite of the offensive night Carrico had it’s his defensive prowess that has earned him a scholarship to play for the famed Buckeye Silver Bullet defense. Carrico was all over the field he can run downhill and blow up blockers and ball carriers and he can also drop in coverage and take away the middle of the field in the passing game. Carrico is a perfect fit for a physical Big Ten defense, and starting next year he’ll get a chance to show it.
Trevor Carter Trevor Carter 6'2" | 205 lbs | ATH Ironton | 2023 State OH S (C/O 2023)- Trevor Carter Trevor Carter 6'2" | 205 lbs | ATH Ironton | 2023 State OH is easily ahead of the recruiting game for a Sophomore as he already holds offers from 3 power 5’s (West Virginia, Arkansas, and Pitt) as well as an offer from Luke Fickell and his 7th ranked Cincinnati Bearcats. Carter is listed at 6’1 190 pounds. At the college level I think he’s a guy who could lineup at either strong or free safety. He’s simply a top notch athlete and has a good feel for playing in space which is what makes him such a natural fit for the safety position. You look at him and he could line up in deep center, he could line up in the box, or he could line up on the line of scrimmage and cover a wide receiver. That kind of versatility is what has him in such high demand at such an early stage, and I expect that demand only to increase as he gains experience and continues to fill out. By his senior season Carter should have his choice of schools to choose from vying for his services.
Roger Bacon
Corey Kiner Corey Kiner 5'10" | 200 lbs | RB Roger Bacon | 2021 State OH RB (C/O 2021)- While Ironton’s defense did a superb job of swarming to the ball and limiting Kiner and the big play, Kiner battled and did a great job of getting every yard available to him. The 5’9 206 pound senior displayed a great combo of acceleration and elusiveness. He has a great burst in and out of his cuts. He stresses the opposing defense with his ability to make something out of nothing. Has excellent vision and is able to find the slightest of creases to form running lanes. The LSU commit finished with 22 carries for 107 yards and 1 catch for 11 yards. There seems to be the opinion floating around out there that the numbers Kiner has produced in high school football are a fabrication of the level of competition he faced. Let me say this is plainly as I can, that opinion is blatantly false. Corey Kiner Corey Kiner 5'10" | 200 lbs | RB Roger Bacon | 2021 State OH is a big time player who’s earned everything he’s gotten, and the scholarship offers that he has back that up.
Nijal Mooney LB (C/O 2021)- Mooney was all over the field on Saturday night. Nijal’s stat line for the night was 13 tackles 3 forced fumbles and a pass broken up. Running sideline to sideline Mooney has the speed and athleticism to get to the ball carrier and he finishes the tackle. Nijal is a late bloomer and is just now starting to pick up interest from college recruiters. He’s someone that should really take off in the recruiting scene after a strong senior season. Stay tuned I’m going to have a player spotlight article on Nijal in the very near future!
Ryan Hallau Ryan Hallau 6'4" | 225 lbs | TE Roger Bacon | 2021 State OH WR (C/O 2021)- Hallau played both sides of the ball for the Spartans at tight end and defensive end. He had 7 tackles on defense and 3 catches for 39 yards and a touchdown on the night. He had a really nice one handed catch at a pretty crucial point near the end of the game that was really impressive and got free for a touchdown as well. Hallau plays with a little bit of an edge which I like. While I think he’ll be more of a pass catching tight end at the college level I think he’ll be a capable blocker when needed. Ryan has offers from several Ohio D2’s including Ashland, Tiffin, Ohio Dominican, and others.
