Paulsboro is the real deal: Paulsboro completed its first undefeated campaign in 18 years after it defeated Salem, 22-13, in the West Jersey Football League Pod D championship game. In a battle of undefeated squads featuring two of the top small schools in South Jersey, Bhayshul Tuten put the finishing touches on a great career with 170 yards rushing and three touchdowns. He found the end zone on runs of 1, 29 and 32 yards. The Red Raiders continued their winning ways over Salem, having dominated the series in recent years. Tuten has showcased his shiftiness and quickness in many games this season.
Goffney-Fleming has extremely bright future: Zyaire Goffney-Fleming led Haddon Heights to a 42-27 win over Sterling on Saturday with a eye-opening 280-yard, four-touchdown performance. The sophomore made the most of his 22 carries, and he got it going early on. Coming off a tough loss to Paulsboro, Haddon Heights (5-1) responded well behind its top playmaker. Goffney-Fleming scored on runs of 5, 50, 52 and 63 yards.
Irvington responds well to a loss: Just like earlier in the year after a loss, Irvington responded the week after in a big way. The team put a loss to Randolph last week in the rearview mirror, and they came back and defeated Passaic Tech, 35-14, on the road on Saturday. Irvington got it done on the ground, as Rakeem Ross and Al-Jay Henderson combined for all five scores.
COVID can make an impact right before kickoff: One of the weekend’s most anticipated matchups didn’t happen on Saturday. Delbarton and Bergen Catholic, two powerhouses ranked in the top five in the state, had their game canceled right before kickoff after a positive COVID-19 test was made aware just minutes before kickoff. It was obviously a devastating blow for the seniors in the game and the two teams that prepared and were looking forward to this battle all week.
