Let’s take a look at the winners from the final day of the season.
Millville: It wouldn’t be a normal football season without a Millville-Vineland meeting. The oldest Thanksgiving rivalry in the state had to be delayed two days due to COVID-19. Millville had little trouble on Saturday, cruising past Vineland, 35-3, to end a four-game losing streak in the series, which now has Vineland leading 67-63-19. Millville led 6-0 at halftime before exploding for 29 third-quarter points, while Vineland’s lone points came on a fourth-quarter field goal. LaQuint Allen, who carried 30 times for 148 yards and three touchdowns, led the Thunderbolts. Quarterback Nate Robbins finished 10 of 16 for 174 yards and two touchdowns, finding Davonte White on a 40-yard TD and then Calem Bowman on a 61-yard score. Ti-yon Cephas and Allen had interceptions on the defensive end.
Steve Burkhardt, Gloucester: It was a strong day for Burkhardt in Gloucester’s 48-0 blowout victory over rival Gloucester Catholic. He carried 10 times for a whopping 241 yards and three touchdowns, and he also scored on a 36-yard pass from Adrian Delgado. Burkhardt was a threat every time he got the ball, as he scored on runs of 10, 44 and 92 yards. Gloucester concluded the season with a 5-2 record, its first winning season in five years. The Lions also beat Gloucester Catholic for the first time since 2015.
Adrian Delgado, Gloucester: Delgado returned a fumble 101 yards for a touchdown in Gloucester’s shutout victory over Gloucester Catholic.
Cohi Mercado, St. Joseph (Hamm.): Mercado ran for 142 yards on 18 carries and scored on a 2-yard run in St. Joseph’s 51-31 victory over Burlington Township on Saturday. He also caught four passes for 86 yards and had one of the team’s two interceptions on defense.
Ahmad Ross Ahmad Ross 6'2" | LB St. Joe's (Hamm.) | 2021 State NJ , St. Joseph (Hamm.): Ross was extremely effective on the ground for St. Joseph with 139 rushing yards on 30 carries, scoring four touchdowns.
Jahqir Haley, St. Joseph (Hamm.): Haley recovered two fumbles in St. Joseph’s win over Burlington Township. On offense, he made a 27-yard TD grab from Ja’son Prevard.
Ja’son Prevard, St. Joseph (Hamm.): Prevard threw for 130 yards and a touchdown and also made an interception on defense for St. Joseph.
Anthony Johnson, Burlington Township: Johnson made six catches for 171 yards and he caught three of quarterback Gage Miller’s four touchdown throws. He was a threat downfield with TD receptions of 25, 38 and 47 yards.
Dean Denobile, Morris Catholic: Denobile closed out an eye-opening junior campaign with a six-touchdown performance in Saturday’s 55-12 victory over Whippany Park. In Morris Catholic’s sixth win in a row, and seventh overall, Denobile found Walter Quick on three of those touchdowns, also connecting with Thomas Stark twice and Nick Gonzalez. The Crusaders finished the season with a 7-2 record. Denobile threw for over 2,000 yards on the season.
Walter Quick, Morris Catholic: In addition to Quick’s three TD receptions, including a 49-yard catch, the Morris Catholic senior also scored on a 74-yard punt return.
Hunter Morgenroth, Whippany Park: Morgenroth had a nice day for Whippany Park despite coming up short against Morris Catholic. He threw two touchdown passes, including a 57-yarder to Dylan Yacat, and he found the end zone on a 39-yard run.
Nutley Ground Game: Nutley added to the list of undefeated teams in New Jersey, finishing with a 6-0 record after Saturday’s dominant victory over Belleville. This year’s team became the first undefeated group at the school in 81 years. Nutley scored 21 points in the first quarter. The group got it done on the ground. John Coppola ran 21 times for 120 yards and scored on a 4-yard run, while Gennaro Longobardi, who also had a 75-yard interception return for a score, put it on the ground 13 times for 128 yards and a 22-yarder for six. Vincent Miller added two receiving TDs for Nutley.
Ryan Butler Ryan Butler 5'11" | 205 lbs | RB Bergen Catholic | 2022 State NJ , Bergen Catholic: Butler finished off a strong junior campaign in Bergen Catholic’s 22-15 victory over St. Peter’s Prep. Butler scored the game-winning touchdown on a 1-yard run following a drive that lasted nine minutes and 83 yards. Bergen Catholic’s star rusher finished with 137 yards on 31 carries. He was also involved in the passing game, as quarterback Steve Angeli, who scored himself on a run earlier in the game, threw a 65-yard TD pass to Butler that gave the team the lead in the second quarter. Butler finished with 104 receiving yards on three receptions.
De’Juan Samuels, Bergen Catholic: Samuels had two sacks for Bergen Catholic in Saturday’s win over St. Peter’s Prep.
Tahjamell Bullock, St. Peter’s Prep: Bullock, a Virginia Tech commit, closed out his St. Peter’s career with two touchdowns. He found Samuel Slade for a 37-yard score and Sha’zir Sullivan on a 14-yard TD strike. Bullock again connected with Sullivan on a two-point conversion that gave St. Peter’s Prep a 15-14 lead.
