Combines and drill work are only a piece of a player’s overall evaluation but here are five of the standout performances from the class of 2022.
ATH Chrisjen Riekeberg, Macon–Though slightly built, the 5’9, 154 lb. athlete had quite a day. Riekeberg ran a 4.56 40 yard dash showing an explosive start and good form. His short shuttle (5-10-5) time was an impressive 4.18. Then on the jumps, the Macon do-it player broad jumped 9 feet, 9 inches, and finished the testing off with a powerful 36-inch vertical jump. In drill work as a receiver, Riekeberg left defenders out of the break and showed quick, soft hands.
QB Brockton McLaughlin, Osage–I tweeted about Brockton last week after watching his Hudl. While there are mechanical issues that are easy fixes in his passing of the football, McLaughlin has all the tools to work with. Flashing cornerback speed, the Osage QB ran a blazing 4.5 flat 40 and a quick 4.38 short shuttle. The quarterback coaches on hand continued to work with McLaughlin and pointed out with his raw talent, he is just a few workouts away from being highly recruited.
LB Zakhi Johnson, Holt–Another reason I love combines is to see players up close and personal that I didn’t know much about. Johnson is a perfect example. A tightly built junior, Johnson had one of the best days of any athlete on Sunday. To start, his 36.5-inch vertical jump tied for the best in the 2022 class. That is while standing at 5’11″. His 9 foot 5-inch broad jump was a top 10 score and he ran a 4.44 short shuttle. Johnson needs to hit the weight room and training table to add some weight to his frame, but athletically, Johnson can compete versus anyone in the state.
TE Cameron Paul Cameron Paul 6'4" | 230 lbs | TE Kirkwood | 2022 State MO , Kirkwood–The 6’4″ long-limbed player moved well in drills as well as stood out in testing. Paul tied Johnson for the best vertical jump of the 2022’s with a 36.5-inch hop. He ran a 4.56-second short shuttle and even at 220 lbs. has room to add size. With a strong base to build off of and plenty of talent, the Kirkwood junior is one to watch in 2021.
SS Jaiden Tandy, Hickman– Coming in from Columbia, the junior put on a display as a defender in one on ones and while testing. Measuring in at 6’1, 166, Tandy used his length and short-area quickness to be a menace to the wide receivers. His testing numbers are very good. Tandy jumped 9 feet 8 inches in the broad jump and 31.5 inches in the vertical. His 40 was 4.65 but with some coaching on his start could be an easy low 4.5. Displaying short-area quickness, the Hickman star ran a 4.28 short shuttle.
