The Prep Redzone Class 2A All-State Team features a great mix of Class of 2021 and Class of 2022 talent.
It gives us a chance to both reward those who are moving on and look towards next year and what might be for those soon-to-be-seniors.
Here’s the team:
OFFENSE
Quarterback
Zach Lutmer, Central Lyon/George-Little Rock (2022)
All Zach Lutmer did as a sophomore was step into the lead role of the Central Lyon/George-Little Rock offense, lead them to the state championship game and pace Class 2A with over 2,800 total yards.
Lutmer is more than just a QB, though, as his skills shine in several facets. He threw for nearly 1,200 yards with eight TDs while running for over 1,600 and scoring 23 times.
Lutmer is the prototypical new-age signal-caller that can both chuck it down the field and take it himself. His progression over the next two years will be very interesting to watch and see.
Running Backs
Preston Pope, West Marshall (2022); Jahsiah Galvan, West Liberty (2022)
The Class of 2022 is a great one and two key prospects in it are Preston Pope and Jahsiah Galvan. Pope ran for over 1,800 yards with 24 touchdowns while Galvan had nearly 1,700 and 14 scores.
Speed, speed and more speed are what both Pope and Galvan bring to the field. The two averaged 7.7 (Pope) and 8.6 (Galvan) yards per carry. That is just ridiculous over the course of an entire season.
Wide Receivers/Tight Ends
Jordan Lawrence, Camanche (2021); Collin Swantz, Mount Vernon (2021); Tyler Luensman, Monticello (2021)
A feel-good story was Camanche’s Jordan Lawrence. He has returned from several different injuries, sliding into a big-time player role at WR with 72 receptions for over 900 yards and 13 scores. Collin Swantz found the end zone 14 times for Mount Vernon and Tyler Luensman hauled in over 800 yards worth of passes.
All three of these guys can both stretch the defense and convert the much-needed catch for first downs. They all have great hands and good speed to get down the field.
Offensive Line
Greyson Sturm, Monroe-PCM (2021); Nile Schuett, Tipton (2021); Jordan VerMeer, West Lyon (2021); [player_tooltip player_id="23827" first="Luke" last="Pinnick"], West Marshall (2021); [player_tooltip player_id="24003" first="Ethan" last="Hooyer"], Sioux Center (2022)
Utility
Cade Everson, Camanche (2021)
With over 2,400 all-purpose yards, Camanche was able to rely on Cade Everson for a little bit of everything this past year. The 200-pounder ran for over 1,500 yards, caught 26 passes, averaged 25 yards on kickoff returns and nearly 24 yards on punt returns.
Everson was all over the field, scoring on 25 touchdowns on runs, catches and returns.
DEFENSE
Defensive Line
Brayden Evertson, West Marshall (2021); [player_tooltip player_id="23938" first="Brennan" last="Sweeney"], Waukon (2021); Thomas Gansen, Clear Lake (2021); Zavion McMurrian, Estherville-LC (2023)
Despite it being a shortened season, Brayden Evertson of West Marshall was still able to record 17 sacks and 30.5 tackles for loss. At 6-foot-1 and nearly 200 pounds, Evertson has great speed and strength off the edge.
Linebackers
Eric Kinkaid, Camanche (2022); Kale Rodgers, North Fayette Valley (2021); Karson Sharar, Iowa Falls-Alden (2021)
Karson Sharar could have played basketball at the next level, but he will instead head to Northern Iowa to continue his football career. He dominated on both offense and defense, but one would have to think his future is on defense.
Secondary
[player_tooltip player_id="23896" first="Creed" last="Welch"], Waukon (2021); Grahm Humpal, Anamosa (2022); Jordan Severs, Hampton-Dumont/CAL (2021); Grant Sturm, Atlantic (2021)
If you missed any of the state playoffs, you missed out on watching a phenomenal player in [player_tooltip player_id="23896" first="Creed" last="Welch"]. Battling injuries, Welch led Waukon to the state title. Like Welch, Atlantic’s Grant Sturm was a do-everything kind of player for his team. Both have excellent speed and field vision.
Utility
Matt Christensen, Estherville-LC (2021)
All of those skills on the offensive side as a receiver made Matt Christenen a dangerous player on defense. The Estherville-LC senior picked off five passes, returning one for a score.
SPECIALISTS
Kicker/Punter
Nathan Barnes, Clarinda (2021); [player_tooltip player_id="23859" first="Payten" last="Elijah"], Tipton (2021)
