Yet, it felt a bit familiar.
Andrews’ only two losses of the year came against the Swamp Foxes. In between, Durham’s bunch won its other five games – all in impressive fashion – and earned opportunities for three seniors to join current Apprentice School commitment and running back Keshaun Williams in the college ranks.
WILLIE BENNETT, DB
The 5-foot-10, 165 pounder has spent the last two seasons frustrating opposing quarterbacks and receivers alike. While he’s broken up a bunch of passes and picked off a couple passes – something he’s done by keeping his eyes in the right space – he also tackles more like a safety. He had 18 total tackles this fall.
R.J. GILES, WR
Giles is a true college project, if for no other reason that he didn’t start playing football until his junior season and didn’t really get on the field much until this fall. In that one season, he led the run-based offense in receiving yards (334), receptions (15) and receiving touchdowns (four). He’s a small-school prospect, but that school is going to get a constantly evolving player.
ELI DURHAM, QB/P/LS
The coach’s kid threw for eight touchdowns and 677 yards, and he rushed for another four scores. Those came in just seven games. He’s also punted and learned how to snap on kicks. However, what makes Durham so attractive to the small colleges around the Carolinas is a grade-point average hovering around 4.9 on the weighted scale. He hasn’t had anything lower than an A since eighth grade.
