We don’t aspire to be perfect with our rankings, but we love what we do to help these kids to the next level! Here comes group two of our 2021 stock risers.
Joseph Turay Joseph Turay 5'10" | 195 lbs | RB SF Roosevelt | 2021 State , RB, Sioux Falls Roosevelt
Rankings: Up 7 spots to #41 from #34 from our inaugural October rankings.
The Why: What I found about Turay’s game the second time around was even better. The consistency he put together on the ground for the Rough Riders was excellent. His ability to do two things extremely well is what stuck out to me to move him up the rankings. Patience) Turay does a nice job waiting for what the offensive line is setting up before he finds his lane. Blocking) Turay threw some blocks this year that are better than some fullbacks I have seen in the Dakotas. He also is a consistent runner. Sometimes we highlight guys too much for rushing for the big gain vs. guys like Turay, who consistently pushes for 10-15 yards at a time, which I want from my running back at the college level. In my honest opinion, Turay remains unsigned and very overlooked with only one JUCO offer thus far. Whoever lands Turay will get a kid with a team-first attitude that a very productive inside runner.
Jack Steckler Jack Steckler 6'4" | 195 lbs | WR Bisrmarck | 2021 State , WR/TE, Bismarck
Rankings: Up 27 spots to #45 from #72 from our inaugural October rankings.
The Why: Steckler saw an upcharge in our rankings after committing to NDSU next year. The length (6’5, 210) of Steckler will be something to watch at the next level. The Demons used his versatility to line him up wherever they wanted, as he was an asset just about everywhere, whether it was in the backfield bulldozing over defenders, lining up in a typical tight end spot getting key first downs, or lining him up out wide to use his quick-twitch in his feet and vertical to outman some defenders. He will be a tight end for the Bison I’ll look forward to watching in the coming years.
Cooper Mattern Cooper Mattern 6'1" | 200 lbs | QB Shanley | 2021 State , QB, Fargo Shanley
Rankings: Up 25 spots to #55 from #80 from our inaugural October rankings.
The Why: Mattern does a fantastic job of extending plays in a senior season where he threw for more than 2000 yards for Fargo Shanley this season. I would have put him as my #1 QB in our Fargo city rankings to end the season. His fluid arm strength from the middle to long is outstanding, and his throwing ability on the run will do wonders at the next level. Mark my words, Mattern is going to be an outstanding quarterback for the Johnnies of Saint John’s (MN) in the coming years.
Grant Romfo Grant Romfo 6'1" | 200 lbs | RB Langdon-E-G | 2021 State , ATH, Langdon Area
Rankings: Up 51 spots to #36 from #87 from our inaugural October rankings.
The Why: It would be hard to believe is there was another duo of twins in the Dakotas better than the Romfo’s, and if you watch the film, it proves that with Grant Romfo Grant Romfo 6'1" | 200 lbs | RB Langdon-E-G | 2021 State and his brother Simon. Romfo does an excellent job as a linebacker at the first level in just ball-hawking to the football. Romfo’s vision shows a player that will be a great linebacker at the college level. Romfo could also be an asset catching passes out the backfield, as his 6’1 195-pound frame was tough to bring down last season.
Tyler Kjetland Tyler Kjetland 6'4" | 270 lbs | OL Bridgewater-Emery | 2021 State , OL, Bridgewater-Emery
Rankings: Up 39 spots to #66 from #105 from our inaugural October rankings.
The Why: The physical punch Kjetland has was a quick indicator that he needed to be inside the top 70 in our updated rankings. Kjetland has to be one of the top centers in all of the Dakotas for his excellent play these last four years. A kid that just brings physicality to a higher standard than most on the offensive line, a bruiser type prospect in the trenches that’s not afraid of anyone. He has so much force in his drive and it will be something fun to watch as Kjetland takes his talents to Northern State.
Cody Thompson Cody Thompson 6'0" | 185 lbs | QB Lemmon/McIntosh | 2021 State , QB, Lemmon-McIntosh
Rankings: Up 16 spots to #95 from #111 from our inaugural October rankings
The Why: Regardless of where you play, when you can throw for over 3000 yards in your senior season, you are going to get some recognization. The Black Hills State commit does a great job extending plays and can get it done with his legs, too, averaging well over 10 yards per carry when he ran with it this season along with 9 touchdowns. I also am a fan of how well this kid throws on the run as his arm strength is second to none. In my opinion, a sleeper commit for BHSU as the Hornets were somehow his only offer.
Kobey June Kobey June 5'10" | 170 lbs | ATH Dakota Valley | 2021 State , ATH, Dakota Valley
Rankings: Up 38 spots from #115 to #77 from our inaugural October rankings.
The Why: June, in my opinion, is a next-level kid that you’ll want to take a look at. It’s a hard determination on film to figure out where his solid burst would fit in the backfield because of the offense Dakota Valley has run during his time there. Once he uses his vision to isolate from the defense, it’s all downhill for the defense from there as the gas pedal has already hit the floor! June is not really active on social media but could be a top 80 prospect that seems to be uncommitted and possibly one the best players without an offer in our class of 2021 rankings. January would be a great time to give this kid an opportunity at the next level.
