As college commitments from the Class of 2021 continue to roll in, I thought it would be a good time to reassess who are some of the top ’free agents’ still out there for colleges to scoop up. These guys will likely be playing somewhere next year – but as of this story – nobody knows where. The first installment of hopefully a series of these stories focuses on the quarterback position.
Alex BerrethAlexBerrethQBFarmington | 2021StateMN Farmington
Berreth is probably best in the pocket, but he also throws well on the move. He can push the ball downfield and doesn’t need to set his feet to throw deep. Berreth is a willing and effective runner who is comfortable with RPO concepts. Berreth is also a pitcher on the Tigers’ baseball team, so the senior might not only be deciding where he wants to go, but what sport he will be playing.

First and foremost, Braaten is a football player. He has played wide receiver, tight end, defensive back during his varsity career, and during his senior season – quarterback. He has a strong arm and throws an accurate deep ball. He doesn’t even need his feet set to push the ball downfield off his back foot. If the play breaks down, that is when his athletic ability shows as he can still be effective as a passer and as a physical runner. With the shotgun being used all over the state, Braaten is comfortable under center and in shotgun. The senior also played safety in 2020. He also plays basketball and baseball.
Landon JonesLandonJones6'5" | QBAnnandale | 2021StateMN Annandale
Jones looks good as a pocket passer. He has a strong arm, and when he steps up in the pocket, he generates a lot of velocity on his throws. He stands tall in the pocket and is willing to take a hit in exchange for a completion. He doesn’t look as comfortable outside the pocket but can still put the ball on his receiver when on the move.
Reid PattersonReidPattersonQBLakeville South | 2021StateMN Lakeville South
Patterson doesn’t get as many opportunities in the passing game as other quarterbacks because of the Lakeville South offense. Still, he shows great ball-handling skills and is effective in the play-action game. When called on to throw, he can throw on the move as well as from the pocket. He is accurate with mid-range and underneath throws. Patterson can play under center as well as in shotgun. He is also an important member of the defensive backfield. Patterson might end up playing basketball in college.
George SandvenGeorgeSandvenQBEdina | 2021StateMN Edina
Sandven’s tall frame is perfect for the quarterback position. He makes quick decisions with the ball and gets the ball out quickly. On his tape, he looks to have a smooth release. Even on deep throws, his throws look effortless. He is basically a pocket passer who doesn’t look to run unless necessary but can throw on the move and has improved as a runner. Like most of the quarterbacks on this list, he plays both under center and in the shotgun.
