That prospect is five-star QB Gunner Stockton Gunner Stockton 6'1" | 220 lbs | QB Rabun County | 2022 State GA of Rabun County (GA). The 6-foot-1 220-pound QB committed to Will Muschamp and Mike Bobo back in August, but has now decided to open up his recruitment under new head coach Shane Beamer. Former Gamecocks offensive coordinator Mike Bobo was a big reason why South Carolina landed Stockton’s commitment before the season, and with Bobo now at Auburn, look for the Tigers to come hard after the Georgia native moving forward.
Stockton has been incredibly productive for Rabun County and has started since his freshman season. He’ll be a four-year starter and will look to rewrite the passing records in Georgia by the end of his career. As a freshman, Stockton wowed the state by throwing for 2,917 yards and 34 TDs to go along with 709 rushing yards and 17 more scores. In his first year of high school football, Stockton was already the best player on the field each and every game. He was so technically sound and already had the physical presence to dominate at the high school level at such a young age. The early hype was real, and Stockton quickly became a top prospect and an early 5-star candidate in the 2023 class.
Stockton followed up his stellar freshman season with another incredible year as a sophomore. Leading the Wildcats to a 12-1 record, Stockton threw for 3,473 yards and 43 touchdowns. On the ground, Stockton rushed for 1,126 yards and 19 touchdowns. The offers came rolling in, and Stockton once again proved why he was one of the top young QBs in the entire country.
As a junior this past fall, Stockton threw for 3,128 yards and 45 touchdowns. He has elite arm talent and is incredibly accurate throwing the football. He’s technically sound and has elite pocket presence with the ability to escape and make plays with his feet. On the ground, Stockton rushed 191 times for 1,581 yards and 26 TDs. He couldn’t be stopped during his junior year and led the Wildcats to another deep playoff run where they would eventually lose to state-champion Callaway.
Stockton will give one lucky school a skillset that is much-needed in today’s era of college football. He’s a true playmaker who can win games both with his arms and his legs. He has the “it” factor and has been tough to stop for ever defense he went up against in 2020.
As far as his recruitment goes, it appears the South Carolina Gamecocks are now completely out of the race. Sources say Stockton wants to make a commitment soon so he can jump on board and start building the best recruiting class that he can. He chose South Carolina over Georgia originally, but it appears the Auburn Tigers, thanks to new offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, are the team to beat currently in his recruitment. Either way, Stockton will be someone who should push for immediate playing time as a freshman with the ability and potential to one day play on Sundays.
