It includes the always talented Lowndes Vikings, the powerhouse Colquitt County Packers, the Camden County Wildcats, and the Tift County Blue Devils.
It’s a region full of talent, but there’s plenty of under the radar players who are on the verge of a breakout season this fall.
Dijamon Wheeler – Colquitt County
The Packers had a big season in 2021 and looked like one of the top teams in the entire classification. A lot of their success on offense was due to junior receiver Dijamon Wheeler. The 6-foot-1 185-pounder is a reliable pass catcher with elite ball skills. He’s a super competitor who is versatile enough to play multiple positions. He’s the backup QB and also returns punts in addition to being one of the top receivers in the region. He has some smaller offers right now but there’s a good chance more him come his way sooner than later. Wheeler led the team in touchdowns last season, and in 10 games total, caught 27 passes for 363 yards and 8 TDs. He also rushed 13 times for 104 yards. Look for him to be one of the most productive receivers in the state this fall as a senior.
Deonte Cole – Camden County
There could be a future star down in Southeast Georgia this year in Camden County receiver, Deonte Cole. He’s not the biggest guy, but he’s extremely explosive at 5-foot-8 155-pounds and has game-changing speed and playmaking ability. Again, he may be undersized, but he’s coming off an impressive sophomore season where he caught 42 passes for 633 yards and 7 TDs in just 10 games. He’s a small underclassman but still found a way to make a big impact all season. The staff at Camden County said Cole is their “Tyreek Hill/Rondale Moore” guy. He changes direction on a dime and makes it so hard for defenders to get a solid hand on him and bring him down. He’s excellent in the open space and can take it the distance on any particular play. He’ll be a 2023 receiver to know this fall.
Antwan Daniels – Colquitt County
Another big playmaker for the Packers, Daniels is an impressive linebacker so really shined as a sophomore last year. The 2023 defender led a very good Packer defense in tackles last year and did it against top-notch competition. Daniels has a nose for the football and can cover a lot of ground in a hurry. He’s a tough competitor with natural instincts and a knack for making big plays. Not every year does a sophomore lead Colquitt County in tackles, but it happened in 2020. Daniels has Power 5 potential and is expected to have another big season for the Packers in his final two seasons.
Tylar Belcher – Lowndes
If there’s one cornerback who saw his stock improve in 2020 it’s Belcher. He’s a little undersized at 5-foot-8 170-pounds but he’s a natural cover corner with great footwork and ball skills. The junior made 50 tackles on the season and showed no problem coming up to make a big tackle around the line of scrimmage. He also made 6 INTs on the season to go along with 309 kick return yards, 183 punt return yards, and 71 INT return yards. He should be considered one of the top returning cornerbacks in the region in 2021.
