Continue ReadingNorthmont finished their 2020 season with an 8-0 record. They unfortunately had to forfeit their last game and their chance to advance in the state playoffs, ending their season. That team had a great deal of talent that will be departing for D1 universities across the country. Rod Moore Rod Moore 5'11" | 185 lbs | DB Northmont | 2021 State OH is headed to the University of Michigan. Former Thunderbolt wide receiver Markus Allen is headed to Madison, Wisconsin to play for University of Wisconsin. The leader of the offense, Quarterback Cade Rice Cade Rice 6'3" | 204 lbs | QB Greenon | 2021 State OH , accepted a scholarship to play at South Dakota State. DeShaun Harewood will be moving on to play cornerback at D2 University of Indianapolis.
Despite the aforementioned departures the Thunderbolts have 3 talented incoming seniors that are ready to step up and take on game changing roles. With big off-season’s these 3 could land themselves D1 or D2 scholarship offers.
WR TJ Gregory 6’4 190- Gregory is starting to gain interest from D1 schools, but a strong camp season will go a long way to finding the D1 offers he’s seeking. He’s every big of 6’4 with good length. He’s a prototypical D1 Split End. I project him as more of a possession receiver at the college level, but he does have the ability to make the big play. Besides his physical tools where Gregory shines is in his route running. He’s very polished and frequently loses his man with his quick cuts, and those double moves are fire as the kids like to say. Due to Allen and Moore getting a lot of the targets for the Thunderbolts Gregory’s tape is not as extensive as it could be, which is a big reason the camp season will be so important for Gregory. Unfortunately like anything the WR position can be a beauty contest, and fast 40 times can be a weak spot for college coaches. TJ is an impressive physical specimen, and if coaches get a chance to see see TJ up close, and in person he’s going to get coaches are going to like what they see. A solid 40 time which he should be able to put out, and a strong showing in 1 on 1’s in the camp season along with his size, will go a long way to land some coveted D1 offers. TJ has received interest from Cincinnati, Miami of Ohio, Central Michigan, and Akron.
EDGE Xavier Vuong Jr. 6’3 210- I like Xavier a lot. Like a lot, a lot. He’s a late bloomer with a high ceiling. He has as good of a get-off and acceleration as you’re going to see at the high school level. He has a solid bull rush move as well. When watching Vuong his speed and athleticism pop off the film. I list him as an edge, because I think he’s a player that’s scheme diverse. He could play as a DE with his hand in the dirt in a 4-3 or he could stand up and play OLB in a 3-4. This is a big offseason for Vuong as at the camps provide him the opportunity to put his combo of get-off and athleticism on display for college coaches to see. Xavier should be able to add weight and strength this offseason, and that will go a long way in rounding out Vuong’s game, which could help him to come out onto the D1 FCS and FBS recruiting scene.
MLB Joe Taylor Jr. 6’2 205- When watching his film what stands out about Taylor are his eyes and his athleticism. When he’s diagnosed a play he looks shot out of a cannon. His athleticism allows him to dip his shoulder and evade blockers. He runs downhill and is an excellent finisher when he arrives. Taylor will benefit greatly from a strong camp season. Joe’s instincts and tackling ability are easy to see on film, but a strong camp season will allow Taylor to show off his remarkable movement skills. I’d like to see Taylor more in coverage to show where he stands as a linebacker who can play all 3 downs. Taylor needs to continue to fill out and add strength to project to the D1-D2 college game.
