One of the state’s top recruits, who you will hear a lot about in the months ahead, is Brooks Ferguson Brooks Ferguson 6'5" | 215 lbs | QB West Salem | 2022 State OR (6-6 215 Jr. QB) of West Salem HS.
Ferguson made the transfer from 5A Central HS this past off season. He is the son of highly regarded Western Oregon head coach Arne Ferguson. Brooks separates himself with his size and overall athleticism. He is a three-sport athlete, playing varsity ball as a freshman while at Central, in all three sports.
The move to West should be commended. He will have the opportunity to play for one of the state’s all-time great coaches in Shawn Stanley, for what is traditionally one of the better programs in Oregon. I will have the Titans ranked #7 heading into the season at the 6A level, as they will return a senior dominant group with the likes of Northern Arizona commit Holden Whipple Holden Whipple 6'4" | 285 lbs | OL West Salem | 2021 State OR 6-5 285 T 21’ and versatile line threat Adrian McConnell Adrian McConnell 6'3" | 255 lbs | DL West Salem | 2021 State OR 6-3 255 DT 21’.
Speaking on growing up in a football family Brooks says, “There are definitely a lot of advantages just being around the game, and learning all the time.”
It’s a unique situation at West with returning starter Jackson Lowery Jackson Lowery 6'4" | 210 lbs | QB West Salem | 2021 OR (6-4 200 QB 21’) earning 1st team all-league accolades as a Junior last season. Lowery is a 4.0 student and a talented kid, but from a collegiate projection standpoint Ferguson is in a class by himself.
It’s a good problem to have if you are Stanley and the Titans as he will find a way to make it work. Brooks will also play free safety which is telling when you have a 6-6 kid with those type of defensive capabilities.
Running back Nate Garcia Nate Garcia 5'11" | 185 lbs | DB West Salem | 2021 State OR (5-11 180 21’) returns after earning 2nd team all-league honors a year ago. Expect him to be one of the top 2021’s state wide with Brooks saying, “He’s definitely one of the best in Oregon and a kid we will rely on heavily.”
It’s a weird year to say the least, and without playoffs it will be tough to gauge where this Titans team ends up ranking, versus other West teams from years past. All of the potential is there for this to be one of Coach Stanley’s best groups. Keep an eye on Ferguson as he should be one of the most intriguing and touted prospects in Oregon heading into his senior year.
