Continue ReadingLocated a few miles from Class 6A powerhouses Cleveland and Rio Rancho, the Class 4A Bernalillo High football team is often overshadowed by its perennial championship-contending neighbors.
As a result, Bernalillo running back/linebacker Ayden Madrid Ayden Madrid 5'11" | LB Bernalillo | 2021 State NM is likely somebody you know little about.
But college coaches in the Land of Enchantment know all about the 6-foot-1, 210-pounder.
Madrid was recently offered by Eastern New Mexico following a home visit by ENMU offensive line coach and run game coordinator Andrew McCraw. He has also been offered by Fort Lewis College in Durango, Co. and St. Norbert College in De Pere, WI.
“When they (ENMU) initially said they were going to come do a home visit and had an offer ready, I was very excited to tell my family,” Madrid told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “I have been in contact with Coach McCraw for the past couple months.”
ENMU is recruiting Madrid as an inside linebacker.
And for good reason. Already ranked by Prep Redzone New Mexico as one of the top five running backs in Class 4A after rushing for 927 yards and 17 touchdowns as a junior in 2019, Madrid was even better on the defensive side.
He made a state record 172 tackles (15.6 per game), 8.0 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks, 4 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries from his ILB spot for the Spartans in 2019 when he was named Metro Defensive Player of the Year and District Player of the Year.
Saying Madrid, a starter on the Bernalillo varsity since he was a freshman, possesses a strong nose for the football could be an understatement.
“As a player, I am a natural leader and I guarantee you I will work the hardest of anyone,” Madrid said.
Even with three offers in his pocket, he could end up playing his college football in Albuquerque. The University of New Mexico has expressed interest, and not just as a walk-on but as a scholarship player.
Madrid said Bernalillo head coach John Cobos and the Lobos coaching staff have had preliminary discussions as UNM vets Madrid.
NOTES:
— Madrid isn’t the only Bernalillo player to be offered this week. 2021 OL/DL Adrian Dominguez was offered by Fort Lewis a couple of days ago.
— Three players from Grants have been invited to play in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl in Dallas, Tex. later this week: WR Bryan Hernandez, LB Cyler Aragon and WR T.J. Hocker.
— 2021 Atrisco Heritage OL/DL Chris Rios Chris Rios 6'1" | 215 lbs | LB Atrisco Heritage | 2021 State NM , who is committed to Bethel University in Arden Hills, MN, picked up an offer this week from the University of La Verne.
— The NMAA reportedly sent an e-mail to head football coaches throughout the state informing them that the start of the spring football calendar will likely be pushed back to Feb. 15. The NMAA Board of Directors and, of course, the governor’s office, must approve the new date.
