This past weekend was full of some great match-ups between some of Texas’s powerhouses like Southlake Carrol versus Duncanville and Glenda Park North Shore versus Westlake. Both match-ups proved to be exciting games and surpassed even the highest of expectations of what could even be imagined.
For the 10th time in school history the Carroll Dragons will play for the State Championship!! And against Austin Westlake and former Dragon Head Coach Todd Dodge. Yes, Head Coach Riley Dodge will face his father in the state championship!! @CABCSLC @CarrollDragonFB

Southlake Carrol (NO.21) were underdogs going into the matchup against Duncanville ( NO.5) who had more advantage on their roster physically and talent-wise than Southlake Carrol. However, Southlake knew that everyone was discounting them and labeling them as the underdogs in Saturday’s matchup. The Dragons walked on the field with a chip on their shoulder and a certain fire in their eye, — they had something to prove.
The nations NO.1 QB Quinn Ewers ,—the Ohio State commit was on display for the 10,000 fans in attendance. Duncanville’s defense, however, —had maybe gamed planned too much for Ewers. Effectively holding him to a sub-par performance of 11 of 25 for 168 yards passing and 1 touchdown. Ewers looked out of sync with receivers and just could not find a rhythm throughout the entire game. Consequently, Duncanville’s defense which has only allowed an average of 13.4 points on the season,— gave up 34 points to the Dragon offense in the loss with a final score of 34-27 Southlake Carrol with the victory.
The Star of the game was sophomore runningback Owen Allen, who was a nominee as a Prep Redzone Texas Offensive player of the year award, had an outstanding performance of 192 yards rushing, 2 touchdowns, and overall 248 yards of total yards, in the defeat against Duncanville. Leading the dragons to a ground attack that quite frankly Duncanville’s defense looked ill-prepared or caught off guard by. The sophomore running back was gashing holes for big plays against Duncanville and they had no answer for him.
Credit should also be given to Southlake Carrol’s defense as well, knowing that they were underdogs gave them a certain edge and fire about them. After the previous week’s performance Duncanville’s quarterback Grayson James Grayson James 6'3" | 225 lbs | QB Duncanville | 2021 TX , who threw for 471 yards and three touchdowns in a semifinal win over DeSoto, was held to only 39 yards in the second half and finished the game being 19 of 30 for 185 yards passing.
Owen Allen’s performance and abilities are nothing new to us. We will continue to keep an eye out with more scouting reports and updates on Allen who has had an illustrious career so far for Southlake Carrol, with 2,023 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns. However, no one was more shocked or caught off guard than Duncaville’s defense, not even the announcers could believe as they were astonished to see so many broken tackles and big plays that looked routine for the young sophomore runningback.
Now, father and son will square off in the state championship game in Todd Dodge and Riley Dodge match up against Southlake Carrol and Austin Westlake. In 2005, Todd Dodge and Riley Dodge together celebrated a football championship victory for the Southlake Carrol Dragons, when Todd was the head coach and Riley was the starting QB.
On Dec. 16, 2005, Southlake Carroll head coach Todd Dodge celebrated a state championship win his son, Riley, the team’s starting QB.
Next Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021, Riley will coach against his Dad, now the head coach of Austin Westlake, in the state title.

Westlake proved themselves by being in the conversation of being the best of the best in Texas, with its upset victory over Glenda Park NorthShore. ( 24-21)
