The past year gave us some memorable performances and many of those kids will be looking to do it once again in 2021.
Teagon Kasperbauer, Harlan
Harlan has long been a dominating program on the high school scene in Iowa. Teagon Kasperbauer is keeping the tradition alive from the quarterback position.
As a sophomore, Kasperbauer completed over 51 percent of his passes for 2,553 yards with 23 touchdowns. Regarded as more of a pro-style quarterback, Kasperbauer should be primed for two big-time seasons coming up.
Dylan Wiggins, West Sioux
The next in the line of West Sioux standout quarterbacks, Dylan Wiggins had no trouble stepping in for current Iowa State QB Hunter Dekkers. He completed 55 percent of his passes for 2,083 yards and 22 touchdowns, adding another 257 yards and a score on the ground.
Put him in just a little bit of space, and Wiggins can make you pay. But where he really shines is with his deep ball, showing a strong ability to drop it right in the hands of his receivers. Wiggins also can throw on the move, going either left or right.
Tyler Smith, Sergeant Bluff-Luton
With 22 touchdowns and just four interceptions, it was a banner season for Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Tyler Smith this past fall. Smith completed 67 percent of his passes for 1,880 yards, adding another 303 and six scores on the ground.
A multi-sport athlete, Smith excels in the open field. He has a great arm and is extremely accurate with his passes. His ability to keep the play alive with his feet makes him very dangerous.
Alex Ravlin, Underwood
Despite being a little undersized, there was no denying the production of Alex Ravlin from Underwood. The sophomore signal-caller threw for 1,856 yards with 20 touchdowns, completing nearly 55 percent of his passes.
When he needed to, Ravlin could make up ground with his legs, running for 466 yards and finding the end zone seven times.
Ravlin also showcased his skills on the defensive side of the ball, picking off three passes and making 6.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
Zach Lutmer, Central Lyon/George-Little Rock
As a sophomore, Zach Lutmer led Central Lyon/George-Little Rock to the state title game, putting forth a valiant effort against Waukon. He finished the year throwing for 1,194 yards, running for another 1,609 and accounting for 31 touchdowns.
An all-around gifted athlete, Lutmer has great instincts that help him thrive on both offense and defense. He is more of a runner from his QB position but shows plenty of skills to grow into the role moving forward.
Jacob Maurer, BGM
Completing nearly 63 percent of his passes, BGM’s Jacob Maurer had a spectacular sophomore season. Maurer finished with 13 touchdowns and just three interceptions, throwing for 1,535.
Along with his passing skills, Maurer is also a strong runner, racing up 1,642 yards and 20 more scores.
Maurer has good size and a nice release point for his throws. That allows him to drop the ball in softly to his receivers.
