It never hurts to start finding the younger talent and getting an early start on discovering gems. The list below is composed of just a few 2023 defensive backs located in Harris County who have looked the part on film and who will hopefully soon get recognition for their play on the field. There will be plenty more names who will pop up, this is only the beginning for this talented class of athletes.
Willie Hicks, S – King HS
Hicks is a rangy safety who plays the run and pass very well. He shows the ability to diagnose plays very well and make plays off of it. Hicks shows that he is comfortable in coverage, and breaks on passes very well. In the run game, he is unafraid to stick his nose in the box and make the necessary tackles. Hicks is a standout already for the Panther defense and he will only continue to develop into a great player.
Taylor Davis, S – Ridge Point
Davis is an athletic safety with excellent size. He shows incredible awareness and reads opposing quarterbacks eyes with ease. Davis is a physical player who leaves his mark on the opposition with hits. He plays centerfield very well and covers much ground with his speed when needed. Davis shows he can cover in one vs. one situations and is comfortable doing so. He plays the run extremely well and takes good angles on plays in order to make the tackle. Davis is another young talent who will soon be talked about much, especially going into his junior year.
Ty Morris, S – Dekaney
Morris is an all around athlete who just makes plays. He can play in the box and supply excellent run support, cover the slot and show off his covering skills, or you can place him as a single high safety and allow him to make incredible plays on the ball. Morris covers much ground with his strides and length and breaks on the ball with a purpose. He can play on the edge as well and provide great pressure on blitzes. Morris is a player who can swing the momentum of a game by making the right plays. His name will be talked about very soon because a player with his ability and versatility cannot be hidden for long.
Tyler Hutcherson, CB – Eisenhower
Hutcherson is a very good young talent who plays with much confidence. He plays on an island most of the time and he does not disappoint. From press coverage to zone, Hutcherson plays a smooth game. He mirrors receivers very well and seems to put himself in great position every time. As of now, Hutcherson holds an offer from Tennessee, but expect many more to flow in for this defensive back.
Tay’Shawn Wilson, CB – Mayde Creek
Wilson shows exceptional skill as a cover corner. He is unafraid to play bump and run, and press a receiver, but he shows the ability to recover very well. Wilson is quick on his reads and plays a physical game. He is a very good tackler in the open field as well. Wilson shows to also be a threat in the return game. He has a great burst and can flip the field easily for his team. Expect Wilson to make a name for himself next year and push his name onto a lot of top lists.
Paul Singleton III, S – Summer Creek
Singleton shows the ability to diagnose plays very well which is promising for a player who will be going into their junior year. Based on film, he seems to be a box safety who can cover intermediate routes well and who will continue to chase a play down until the whistle is blown. Promising talent with the proper training and coaching will develop nicely.
Quincy Nevins, S – Westbury Christian
Nevins shows good potential in the secondary. He plays the run very well and changes gears when coming downhill to make a play. Experience will be his greatest ally. The more time Nevins is on the field, the better he will become.
