Continue ReadingIt’s not easy to start as the varsity quarterback for a high school team as a sophomore. It’s even more difficult when it is for a perirenal power house such as Madison Central and you have to follow in the footsteps of a Tennessee signee. The last QB, Jimmy Holiday, took the state by storm as Madison Central’s QB and was one of the most difficult players to game plan for in the country. As a senior, he passed for 1020 yards and 9 TDs while rushing for 1401 yards and 21 TDs. Holiday was a 3 year starter for Jaguars, and it seemed borderline impossible to replace him as a player.
Enter Vic Sutton Vic Sutton 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Madison Central | 2023 State MS . Although only playing 4 games last year at Madison Central, it was not hard to tell that Vic Sutton Vic Sutton 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Madison Central | 2023 State MS was going to be an absolute stud in the 2023 class. Prior to Tuesday when our initial rankings for the class of 2023 in MS came out, Sutton was an unknown player in the recruiting world. That night, he picked up his first offer from Bowling Green in Kentucky.

Sutton got his first start this season against Starkville High School, one of the best teams in the state of Mississippi last year. The Jaguars upset the Yellowjackets 15-9. Sutton was a huge difference maker. While the Jaguars didn’t win the state title, it was clear that they had found their guy for the foreseeable future.
Standing at 6’3″ 200 pounds, the sophomore has the frame already that college coaches love in their quarterbacks. Sutton probably isn’t done growing yet either, so it will be interesting to see what his full potential build looks like. As far as athleticism is concerned, Sutton has the ability to take off for huge gains using his legs. He is a dynamic athlete with twitch in his lower body, but also has the strength to run through contact.
As a passer, Sutton showed a ton of promise last season. He clearly has the arm strength to make every throw in the book. His lower body mechanics are very refined at a young age and he shows the ability to adjust his arm angle to make throws off platform. While most strong armed quarterbacks throw with the most velocity possible every throw they make, Sutton has great touch on the ball and can fit the ball into tight windows and throw a nice fade ball over the shoulder. In the RPO game, Sutton makes great reads and can get the ball out super quickly. Sutton is a composed passer who can do well in the pocket as well as on the run.
As a runner, Sutton is on the rise as an elite level threat. Coaches can call designed quarterback sweeps and power due to his strength and power as a runner, but Sutton can also use his long speed to take off for big gains. While in the pocket, Sutton can scramble around and evade the rush with ease. He makes linebackers and defensive linemen miss with his quick change of direction. In the red zone, defenses have to try and play contain because if a receiver cannot get open, Sutton can pull the ball down and score.
Overall, Sutton is on the rise as a prospect. He will be one of the most highly recruited dual threat QBs in the southeast. With his unique modern day skill set, he projects best in offenses like Dan Mullen’s, Joe Moorhead’s, and Gus Malzahn’s that allow him to use his legs and throwing ability to put up ridiculous numbers. Watch for Sutton to take the state by storm in his first full season starting this year.
