Continue ReadingSouth Carolina has had some monster recruiting classes out of the receiver position in the last few years, and that trend doesn’t appear to be slowing any time soon.
In 2023, another crop of Palmetto State pass catchers will likely be headed to the college ranks with tons of highlights, yards and touchdowns to their credit. As of right now, we’re seeing big things from at least six receivers in the class.
Cole Strickler Cole Strickler 6'4" | 220 lbs | WR Oceanside Collegiate Academy | 2023 State SCSchool: Oceanside Collegiate
Analysis: At 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, Stricker already has the measurements that fit well. Oceanside’s offense, though, will only continue to feed him the ball more and more in the next two years, giving college recruiters plenty of tape for either an outside option or a slot.
Tyler Brown Tyler Brown 6'0" | 160 lbs | WR Greenville | 2023 State SCSchool: Eastside
Analysis: Brown’s effectiveness has yet to be fully realized, of course. But considering that he’s already got a team-leading 500 yards and five scores in his pocket from his sophomore season will be a major confidence builder leading up to the 2021 season.
Gregory Bryant II Gregory Bryant II 6'3" | 170 lbs | WR Strom Thurmond | 2023 State SCSchool: Strom Thurmond
Analysis: If the 6-foot-3, 170-pounder puts on a little more weight, he’s going to become an even bigger problem for opposing defenses. He changes directions very well and has no problem bringing the ball out around the edge off the pop pass.
Nic Brown Nic Brown 6'4" | 220 lbs | ATH Kingstree | 2023 State SCSchool: C.E. Murray
Analysis: Coach Brian Smith already refers to Brown as one of the best players he’s ever coached. And while the sophomore hauled in one-third of the team’s receiving yards last fall, his secondary positions (TE, DE, LB) make him just as invaluable to the team.
Eli Merck Eli Merck 6'1" | 180 lbs | WR DW Daniel | 2023 State SCSchool: Daniel
Analysis: The Lions threw for an average of 350 yards per game en route to their state championship 2020, so it’s no surprise that a bunch of receivers had big stats. None of them were more impressive than Merck, who went for 1,082 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Devin Hyatt Devin Hyatt 6'2" | 195 lbs | WR Bradenton IMG Academy | 2023 State FLSchool: Dutch Fork
Analysis: The younger brother of University of Tennessee’s Jalin Hyatt was able to get his feet wet as a sophomore without much pressure. Next year, he’ll have an even bigger role while teams continue to focus on rising senior Antonio Williams Antonio Williams 6'0" | 180 lbs | WR Dutch Fork | 2022 State SC .
