In this classification, only two teams had a winning record in 2019. By opting into the spring, these schools will not only have a chance to see a balanced playing field, but to even bring home a championship trophy at the state finals at CSU-Pueblo in May.
Teams competing in Class 2A
Based on competitive balance, the East division is the favorite to be the strongest on paper heading into the spring. They will be led by Flatirons Academy, a playoff team last year with a 6-4 record. Also making the playoffs was Manual, a team who got in the playoffs as one of the final seeds and finished with a 4-6 record. Estes Park (4-5), Sheridan (4-5) and Clear Creek (3-6) join them from the Class 1A ranks, as does Ridge View Academy (3-6) from Class 2A.
In the West, look for Buena Vista to be the favorites heading into the season. The Demons went 6-4 and reached the playoffs in Class 1A. The other teams from Class 1A in the division this spring include St. Mary’s (2-7 in 2019), Grand Valley (2-7) and Ellicott (0-9). From Class 2A, Manitou Springs (2-8) and Roaring Fork (0-9) join them this spring.
Players to watch
Matt Berggren, 2021, 5’10, 180, OL/LB, Flatirons Academy
One thing that jumps out on film with Berggren is his relentless motor he plays with. He goes 100 percent on every play, and that helps him make tackles all over the field. His 92 tackles recorded were the most for the team in 2019. He plays well near the line of scrimmage and does not stay latched on blocks very often. He is good on the blitz hitting the gap quickly and does a good job wrapping up the ball carrier at the point of contact. Berggren is a player opposing offenses will have to know where he is lined up at all times.
Seth Moss, 2022, 6’0, 180, OL/DL Buena Vista
Moss is a quality defensive tackle in the lower-level ranks. He does a good job using his hands at the point of contact to create separation and avoid being stuck on blocks. A good rush off the line at the snap makes him a threat to rush up the interior in the passing game, but if he can’t get home to the quarterback, he does a good job getting his hands up to try and bat passes down. The end result was 55 tackles, four sacks and three passes defended in his sophomore season. Moss will also play on the offensive line and be an interior lineman for an offense looking to build on a 2019 season where they averaged 110 passing yards and 168 rushing yards per game.
Kevin Trejo, 2021, 5’10, 182, QB/DL, Sheridan
One of the top sack masters in the 2019 season was Trejo. The defensive end managed to get 19 total sacks, including games where he got five sacks and an interception versus Clear Creek, four sacks against Manual and three sacks against Lyons. He had six games with multiple sacks recorded in them and at times looks unstoppable against the competition. And making him just as unique, Trejo was the team’s quarterback and called on to use his legs to produce. For Sheridan to have success, a lot of it hinges on the play of Trejo.
Caden Vogt, 2022, 6’0, 150, WR/TE/LB, Clear Creek
Vogt was an anchor on the defensive side of the ball for Clear Creek. The linebacker had double-digit tackles in six games in 2019 and finished with 89 total stops. He plays well in the box and helped slow down run games with his ability to come from the second level and get to the running back. His speed and vision helps him as an undersized linebacker still make plays. Vogt may see a bigger role on offense this season with the loss of the two leading receivers for the Clear Creek offense and put his speed to good use there.
Cole Wallace, 2021, 5’10, 160, RB/WR/DB, Estes Park
Wallace is a versatile player used in a variety of ways. Estes Park will put him in the backfield and give him some carries in the spread offense, but they will also get him outside and run some routes in the passing game. He rushed for 549 yards and have 239 receiving yards while scoring six total touchdowns. His balls skills translate on defense too, as he did a good job going underneath routes to break up passes and record four interceptions to go with 22 tackles. Plenty of productive players return for Estes Park, and Wallace is one of the more complete players on that roster heading into the spring.
