Continue ReadingDefensive backs face the tough challenge of covering fast and strong wide receivers while keeping an eye on the quarterback to predict his throws. While there are many potentially great defensive backs out there in Central Texas, these five have truly showcased their potential for next season to be the best. Keep an eye out for these players.
1. Trent West – Belton High School (Belton, TX)
West was among the best defensive backs in the area for 6A. He finished the season with three interceptions and five pass deflections and one fumble recovery. His three interceptions came against Georgetown, Killeen and Shoemaker and his fumble recovery against Copperas Cove. Overall, Belton struggled as a team by finishing 3-7, but there are some bright spots and that includes West, who can create problems for even the best opposing offenses.
2. Shel Hudson – Dripping Springs High School (Dripping Springs, TX)
Hudson was a busy man last season as he finished the year with five interceptions. He had two interceptions against Lehman and Johnson each and one against Hays in what has been listed on MaxPreps. Based on these stats alone, Hudson has a lot of potential to be disruptive especially given the amount of teams he faces that like to throw the ball. Hudson is definitely one to watch especially when he gets hot in the secondary.
3. Carter Hudson – Liberty Hill High School (Liberty Hill, TX)
A different Hudson, Carter Hudson, was on a roll early last season when he totaled five interceptions. His interceptions came against Marble Falls, Navarro, Boerne-Champion and Rouse. He also had a fumble recovery against Crosby during the playoffs. Carter Hudson plays for an elite Liberty Hill team and considering he will be amongst the leaders in the secondary next season, this should scare any team Liberty Hill faces. Considering how dominant Liberty Hill already was, facing an experienced and older Carter Hudson could be a challenge.
4. Daniel Hanna Jr. – Glenn High School (Leander, TX)
A player that was able to get turnovers against some of the best teams in the area, Hanna totaled four interceptions with those coming against Veterans Memorial, Brenham, Pflugerville Connally and Cedar Creek. He also totaled 36 total tackles. As a whole, Glenn had an average 4-6 season and was inches away from some wins against East View and Rouse, but there is promise for the Grizzlies if they can fine-tune the mistakes made in those close losses. Players such as Hanna will aid in that positive direction as he has already shown himself to be a ball hawk and with the continued reps that seniors get, Hanna can be electric next season.
5. Jonathan Clark Jonathan Clark 6'1" | 200 lbs | DB Vista Ridge | 2022 State TX – Vista Ridge High School (Cedar Park, TX)
Clark is another incoming senior defensive back that shows a lot of potential and promise. He totaled three interceptions last season with two of those coming against Westwood. He also had seven pass deflections and forced four fumbles, one he recovered himself. He also had 62 total tackles. Clark was all over the field last season which can only translate to him continuing his momentum next season. He forced three fumbles against Cedar Ridge alone and with another year of experience under his belt and one more year for opportunities to make big plays, Clark is easily a favorite to be among the best defensive backs in the state, especially with a team like Vista Ridge.
