With the 2022 recruiting class fast approaching their senior seasons and hopefully Junior seasons, here is an in-depth look at some of the returning wide receivers in the 2022 class within the North Coast Section.
Robert Freeman, El Cerrito HS
Although a bit undersized, Freeman is one of the most electric athletes in the state that can make an impact in all three phases of the game. Possessing elite short area quickness/start top ability and acceleration to go along with good open field speed and return ability, Freeman projects as a slot receiver at the next level who is crisp out of his breaks and shows strong ball tracking ability and COD skills. Projected as a Power Five caliber player, Freeman should find his home in the Pac-12 or Mountain West by the time it’s all said and done.
Hassan Mahasin Hassan Mahasin 5'10" | 175 lbs | ATH Serra - San Mateo | 2022 State CA , Serra-San Mateo HS
Already holding multiple P5 offers as a Junior, Mahasin is a well built playmaker with a strong lower body and big play ability every time he touches the ball. On tape, he shows a strong initial burst off the line and is a true vertical threat that can stretch the field but can also find the soft spots in zone coverage and settle/burst in a hurry with tremendous third level speed. Able to locate the ball well and precisely stem at the top of his routes, Mahasin will be one of the top receivers in the state and Northern California to sign next year and will have 10+ P5 offers by the time it’s all said and done.
Jalen Moss Jalen Moss 6'0" | 165 lbs | WR Menlo-Athlerton | 2022 State CA , Menlo-Atherton HS
Currently ranked as a 3-star recruit and holding offers from ASU, Oregon, Nebraska, Fresno State and New Mexico, among others, Moss is an explosive receiver with soft hands and can really stretch the field and make defenders miss in space. A longer outside receiver with good high point ability and body control while going up in traffic, he has sneaky open field speed and should be a multi-year starter at the FBS level and has good upside at the position.
Makhai Johnson, Lower Lake HS
A long receiver with a good frame and long arms that is a bit unknown due to playing at a smaller school, Johnson has continuously proved that he can compete with some of the top talent in the state and perform at a high level. A true outside receiver that is a vertical threat and a red-zone mismatch, he has great long speed and can track/haul in passes from many different body positions/angles. Possessing strong hands and able to sink his hips at the top of his routes while also showing good COD ability in open field, he projects as a FBS or FCS prospect at the next level that can continue to add size and weight.
Julian Womack, Saint Mary’s-Berkley HS
A very good sized outside receiver with outstanding ball skills that can go the distance at any given time, Womack is a FBS caliber prospect with plus length and upside. A sure handed weapon with big play ability, he is another under the radar prospect that should explode onto the recruiting scene as he enters into his Junior season. A long strider that adjusts well to the deep ball and shows good open field awareness and natural instincts to force defenders to take bad angles, Womack is poised for a huge Junior season.
Anthony Freeman, Pinole Valley HS
Coming off a strong Sophomore campaign, Freeman is a terrific overall athlete with big play ability every time he touches the ball and is one of the top return specialists in the entire state. Having a strong initial burst and good vision in traffic, Freeman also displays good lateral movement ability and can break arm/ankle tackles due to balance and body control in space and in traffic. Possessing a good third level gear and natural instincts on both sides of the ball, he is a very fluid prospect that will see college interest come his way as he enters into next season.
