These are some of the characteristics that are associated with high caliber tight ends playing at the college level right now. The ability to have good consistent strong hands which allow them to make key catches is a good aspect to have. With offenses diversifying the tight end position, lining them up in the slot/split out wide, or on the line of scrimmage they must show the ability and willingness to block and take the defender out of the running lane. Last but not least the ability to be a red zone threat and position themselves to make tough contested catches and turn them into scoring opportunities.
Let’s take a look at five 2022 Tight Ends from the state of Texas!
Zach Courtney 6-7 235 Post High School
A physical imposing blocker that has latches on to defenders and takes them for a ride which he uses good hand placement and leg drive to be a key contributor in the run game. He has good body control when transition in and out of his cuts and finds the open crease in coverage and makes tough key catches.
Jason Llewellyn 6-5 240 Aledo High School
An explosive versatile athlete at the tight end position where he has lined up out wide, in the slot, or as an “inline” tight end and runs crisp routes to create separation from coverage. A physical blocker that has good awareness and can adjust his path to the block and position himself to seal off the defender.
Garrett Nail 6-4 230 Sweeny High School
A big athlete that has good ball skills and is comfortable with the ball in his hands to make big splash plays and extend drives. He shows the versatility line up as an “H-Back” and come downhill and sustains key physical blocks in the run game.
Logan Tanner 6-4 225 St. Pius X High School
Right from the start of his film, he is a dynamic playmaker that has great speed for his size to stretch the field and create mismatches for the opposing defense. He runs precise crisp routes and accelerates out of his cuts and finds the opening in the defense and is a threat after the catch to extend plays.
Trent McGaughey Trent McGaughey 6'3" | 225 lbs | TE Conroe | 2022 State TX 6-3 225 Shadow Creek High School
A natural pass catcher that has a strong catch radius to make pull in tough to reach passes and secures and gains the extra yards after the catch. he is physical at the point of attack and really drives out defenders in the run game and you can see a consistent strike and leg drive when blocking a defender.
