It didn’t take long for Pawhuska wide receiver Mason Gilkey Mason Gilkey 6'3" | WR Pawhuska | 2022 State OK to make a decision. Just like it didn’t take long for Pawhuska to light up scoreboards in 2020, behind Gilkey and an explosive Husky offense. On Wednesday, Gilkey received his first two offers from Oklahoma State and Eastern Michigan and on Wednesday night, he pulled the trigger and announced his commitment to the Cowboys.
“OSU has always been a dream school of mine,” Gilkey said. “Ever since I was little, I wanted to play at OSU. Covid really hurt me with getting exposure and not being able to go to camps. But I started talking with some of their coaches a few weeks ago. Yesterday, I was talking with Coach Dunn and then all of a sudden I’m on the phone with Mike Gundy, which was surreal to me. Then he offered and said to talk it over with my family.”
Gilkey was a second team All State selection following his junior season, where he racked up a state-leading 26 touchdowns for a Pawhuska offense that set records. Pawhuska would set the state record for most points in a regular season, they scored over 90 points on two occasions and went into the playoffs averaging nearly 70 points per game.
“We would talk about it on the sideline,” Gilkey said about their high-powered offense. “What happens if we score 100 points? Does it go back to 1? We knew every week that we would be able to put up a lot of points.”
Gilkey talked with his family on Wednesday following the offer and conversation with Gundy. And even though Gilkey knows that he will be recruited even more now since OSU has offered and he’s committed, it was the right fit for him. “I talked with Gundy again and let him know that I would like to commit.”
Gilkey is the fifth prospect in Oklahoma’s 2022 class to give a verbal commitment. Mustang tight end Andre Dollar Andre Dollar 6'4" | TE Mustang | 2022 State OK (Oregon) and Edmond Santa Fe wide receiver Talyn Shettron Talyn Shettron 6'3" | WR Edmond Santa Fe | 2022 State OK (Oklahoma) are both committed. Gilkey joins Beggs running back CJ Brown CJ Brown 6'1" | RB Beggs | 2022 State OK and Stillwater linebacker Gabe M Brown Gabe M Brown 6'2" | LB Stillwater | 2022 State OK as Cowboy commitments. OSU had a very strong in-state class with the 2021 group and they are certainly off to a great start with the 2022 class.
Pawhuska fell short of their ultimate goal of a state championship when they they lost to eventual champion Cashion in a semifinal classic. Cashion and Pawhuska were without a doubt the top two teams in the state and they ended up meeting in the semifinals as opposed to a title game. The Huskies lost 7-6 and Cashion went on to complete the first ever 16-0 season. Gilkey and his teammates are already looking forward to the 2021 season.
“We’re really hungry. Our young guys won’t miss a beat. Even in the big games they were in there playing. We’ll make a deep run and I think we have a shot at winning it all.”
