Some of these guys had short seasons due to COVID or injuries, but still got enough film to draw some deserved attention. Take a look at 5 DB’s who are still available:
Steven Hoffman, 6’2″ 170lbs, Sunrise Mountain HS
Hoffman missed 6 games due to a broken collarbone, and with a full season he would definitely be a legit FBS prospect. He transitions out of his backpedal nicely and breaks on the ball extremely well. Good hip flexibility and shows solid range when lined up as a FS. He can man up on WR’s on lock them down, showing the ability to play both CB and FS at the next level. He’s a big time ball hawk with good route recognition. He shows solid instincts all around with good closing speed as a tackler. Could improve strength at the POA, but is an excellent athlete to have in the secondary. He currently holds a PWO from the University of Nevada.
Shane Pitts Shane Pitts 5'10" | 190 lbs | DB Liberty | 2021 State AZ , 5’10″ 190lbs, Liberty HS
Pitts plays with a high motor with solid reaction and instincts. He shows solid play recognition and plays receivers very well in the back half of the field. He has excellent closing speed with a good striking ability as he is able to jar the ball loose immediately after the catch often to force PBU’s. He reads the QB well and has shown a good break on the ball. He does an excellent job with run support, as he can fill alleys, pursue to the sidelines, or even become effective in blitz packages and is strong at the POA. He holds notable offers from University of Mary, Chadron State, and interest from San Diego and Dartmouth.
Taron Thomas Taron Thomas 5'10" | 180 lbs | DB Desert Vista | 2021 State AZ , 5’11″ 180lbs, Saguaro HS
Thomas didn’t get much of a senior season with only 3 games played due to the transfer rule (transfer from Desert Vista) and the 3 COVID cancellations for Saguaro. Thomas shows fluid and flexible hips with a solid change of direction with nice twitch. He has solid range as a 1-high safety and can cover ground very well in the pass game and is a flat out ball hawk. He closes on ball carriers well and showed improvement his senior year at the POA. He will be an absolute steal for whichever program lands him as he can be a playmaker on both sides of the ball.
Jimmy Pouba Jimmy Pouba 6'0" | 190 lbs | DB Mesa | 2021 State AZ , 6’0″ 190lbs, Mesa HS
Pouba transferred in from Lyons Township High in Illinois and made a big impact for the Mesa defense. He shows solid range at FS and read he QB’s eyes very well. He’s a very good all-around athlete and possesses good ball skills all around, and shows a good understanding of zone responsibilities. He does a good job filling alleys in run support and shows solid reaction and closing speed while being fundamental tackler. Pouba doesn’t give up on plays and will consistently play til the whistle. He holds offers from Valparaiso, Olivet Nazarene, Augustana, and Roosevelt College.
Tyler Spence, 6’0″ 180lbs, Skyline HS
Spence has good range at FS and plays the ball well in the back half of the field. He shows good ball skills all around and has shown big potential to continue to develop into a legit ball hawk. Skyline had him man up on the slot often, and he showed to break on the ball well or initiate immediate contact in off-man coverage on short inside/outside routes. He identifies and fills alleys nicely and is an effective tackler in run support. Solid position versatility as they had him at FS, SS, WR, and QB, but would transition well as a NAIA level safety. He holds numerous offers from Southwest Minnesota State, Dakota State, Presentation, Ottawa (AZ), Arizona Christian, St. Ambrose, Iowa Wesleyan, and Doane.
