North Dakota brought in 19, and South Dakota brought in 4, all of which came from Douglas High School in Box Elder, SD. We look at the Dakota boys the Comets bring to Mayville with some quick hitters on each signee.
Quick Note
Of the 23 signees, the Comets signed seven players that we had ranked in our inaugural Class of 2021 rankings for Prep Redzone Dakotas, which is nearly one-third of their players we’ve had our eyes on.
Gavin Bohlman Gavin Bohlman 5'8" | 165 lbs | ATH Thompson | 2021 State , DB, Thompson (ND)
Bohlman might not be the biggest prospect on the field in the secondary, but he’s not afraid of contact at all whatsoever. Bohlman is the definition of a team player that does an excellent job of initiating problems in the backfield—looking forward to seeing his development in pass coverage during his years as a Comet.
Tyrese Morin, OL, Turtle Mountain (ND)
Morin has a fierce first punch right off the bat. His ability to move around some bodies and keep finding a man to block shows some great instincts to stay physical while being a hog molly on the offensive line. A 2020 graduate of Turtle Mountain was invited to the Down Under Sports Tournament in Australia, one of the only ones out of North Dakota.
Christian Minton, LB, Williston (ND)
Minton has a strong motor off the edge in his years with the Coyotes after moving up from Oklahoma. I think Minton needs to develop a little more physicality in his game, as I saw more from him at linebacker vs. tight end. He also took on punting duties for the Coyotes. His ability to crash in the backfield will be his strength for the Comets. One of two Mayville commits going across the state from Williston.
Ben Dahl Ben Dahl 6'1" | 235 lbs | OL Fargo South | 2021 State , OL, Fargo South (ND)
Dahl’s quickness is something that stands out to me in his film. His ability to get to the other side of the line and pull block is tremendous. Dahl is also a wrestler for Fargo South, a great second sport for the hog mollies in the trenches. Looking back, Dahl was a prospect that should have been on our 2021 rankings as that speed, and his physical blocking ability might make him a standout as a Comet in the coming years.
Dalton Seidel, LB, Williston (ND)
Seidel will be the second linebacker to join the Comets from the Coyotes program.
John Updike John Updike 5'8" | 150 lbs | LB Douglas | 2021 State , LB, Douglas (SD)
Updike brings an undersized yet physical linebacker off the edge to the Comets. He also displays good patience when waiting to make a play on the ball when it’s coming his way. Updike is a prospect that’s physical blocking ability outweighs his measurables. A top 16 prospect in our 2021 linebacker rankings across the Dakotas.
Xander Coleman, Kicker, Fargo South (ND)
Coleman has a good leg on his field goals. He’ll need to develop some hangtime on his kickoffs as most seem to be on the lower end of the hangtime meter. Another strength Coleman has is on squib kicks, which may help the Comets force some turnovers in the coming years, which some speedsters on special teams.
Damon Reyes Damon Reyes RB Grafton | 2021 State , RB, Grafton (ND)
Reyes brings some excellent cutting ability with him over to Mayville State. A bursty tailback that, if he gets outside, could be dangerous in the open field. Reyes runs consistently inside between the tackles for 5+ yards most of the time. Reyes will need to develop some extra stamina on his long runs at the next level. One of their running backs signed from the Dakotas in this 2021 class.
Logan Hoff, QB, Richardton-Taylor (ND) University of Mary Transfer
Hoff does an excellent job of getting the football out quickly out of his hands. His accuracy and throwing ability looks very fluid on film. He does a nice job leading his receivers on balls over 15+ yards. Hoff is headed to Mayville after spending the 2019 season year over at the University of Mary in Bismarck, where he led the scout team. Hoff averaged over 9 yards per pass and threw for 15 touchdowns in his senior season at Richardton-Taylor. He has sound measurables at 6’3, 185.
Joe Nelson Joe Nelson 6'4" | 250 lbs | OL Northern Cass | 2021 State , OL, Northern Cass (ND)
Nelson does an excellent job with his mobility of getting out in front for his tailbacks. He keeps a good pad level on his blocks. Nelson is a player that will be a sound paver for his tailbacks at Mayville State. Another member joining the Comets was Class A all-region on the offensive line.
Tommy Zander, DL, Richland (ND)
Zander has a good get-off when it comes to shedding blocks on the defensive line. His ability to stretch out and get a tackle while still engaged with a block is a core strength of his game. Zander is an engaging prospect that will take on multiple blocks to get inside the rushing lanes he needs to make a play on the ball. Zander would be another prospect I would add to our 2021 rankings after paging thru his film. One of two defensive linemen from the Dakotas signing with the Comets.
Anthony Johnson, LB, Mandan (ND)
Johnson has limited football film but has signed to be a two-sport athlete at Mayville State in football and signing for baseball. Johnson was recognized in the 2020 season, getting honorable mention nods by the Western Dakota Association.
Alex Cluchie, LB, Langdon Area (ND)
Cluchie will move over to linebacker at Mayville State but was first team in Class A for offensive linemen in the 2020 season. Cluchie is a three-time state champion for the Cardinals blocking in front of two twin brothers headed to play FCS football in RB Grant Romfo Grant Romfo 6'1" | 200 lbs | RB Langdon-E-G | 2021 State and QB Simon Romfo Simon Romfo 5'11" | 175 lbs | QB Langdon (ND) | 2021 State . The holes Grant was able to run through and the extension of plays Simon had made me think this kid has a lot of potential despite a lack of film. The Comets saw that firsthand up the road in Langdon.
Grant Kocher, OL, Divide County (ND)
The Comets are getting a fighter with this kid. I love how this kid finishes his blocks; as you can tell, he puts 100% effort into every play. What’s even better? This kid will be a tight end defense might forget about, that has good hands and could be a threat deep in the red zone.
Cole Pfund Cole Pfund 6'0" | 175 lbs | DB Oak Grove Lutheran | 2021 State , WR, Oak Grove Lutheran (ND)
All gas and no brakes are good ways to describe Pfund as he has some wheels that go fast. What’s the best about his speed is how fast his burst starts up once he gets the ball; it’s like a Corvette going from 0 to 60 in no time at all. Pfund also has some tangible measurables and vertical and should be a stud for the Comets.
Brannin Cleem, RB, Cavalier (ND)
Cleem was an active runner at quarterback for Cavalier. He has some excellent mobility and has a lot of shift in his legs to get some defensive guys out of their shoes. Cleem ould be used in some special packages, as this kid has pretty deep arm strength.
Logan Krueger, WR, Mayport-CG (ND)
Krueger was second-team all-state in North Dakota as a senior. Not much film available for an eval, but Krueger won’t have to travel too far to play nor have to play in a new stadium this fall, being one of few local players to sign with the Comets.
Nathan Rage, WR/P, Hillsboro (ND)
I am a fan of Rage’s length at wide receiver. Another strength I think Rage can bring to the Comets is an excellent punting leg. Rage can only get better with the hang time he already has. He could be a special teams asset for Mayville State with his versatility there.
Dylan Bye, OL, Hillsboro/Central Valley (ND)
Bye was one I struggled to find the film on for an evaluation. Bye is one of two Burros that signed at nearby Mayville State. He was an All-Region performer as a senior.
Treys Tietz, WR, Mandan (ND)
Tietz footwork will get him some receptions up at Mayville. His ability to start and stop on a dime is one of his biggest strengths in my eyes. His ability to start, stop and blast off with his speed is going to catch some in the Northstar Conference by surprise. A kid I wish we grabbed on our 2021 rankings.
Tyler Clark Tyler Clark 5'8" | 170 lbs | RB Douglas | 2021 State , RB, Douglas (SD)
Clark may lose a little size as Jason Maciejczak won’t be blocking in front for him at Mayville, but this kid’s sneaky running ability should do just fine as a Comet. Clark was an all-conference performer as a senior and a sound runner that can get the yards needed and break for the big one with his good burst of speed in the open field.
Thomas Holy Rock, DL, Douglas (SD)
Holy Rock is an extremely fierce blocker, to say the least. Every bit of film I saw, I got a glimpse of his aggressive play on both sides of the line for the Patriots. In my opinion, the Comets got a sleeper from the West River, which brought four players to Mayville from Box Elder in this recruiting class.
Garrett Jamison, OL, Douglas (SD)
Jamison does an excellent job getting on the pad level; he needs to get some leverage. Jamison is a prospect that can move the pile and should use his 6’3 280 pounds to good use in Mayville.
