“I would like to say thank you to Dr. Robinson and the entire Sikeston community for choosing me to lead our program back to excellence,” Wagner said in a social media post. “My family and I are excited to join the Bulldog family and make Sikeston our new home.”
“There is a lot of work ahead,” Wagner continued. “There are a lot of relationships to be built. There are a lot of connections to be made. There are a lot of wins in our future, both on and off the field.”
Wagner was hired at Ritenour approximately 12 months ago but has yet to coach his first game with the Huskies, due to the school opting out of the fall season in favor of an abbreviated spring schedule.
So that means as Wagner begins to coach his first game at Ritenour he has already announced he will be moving on at the conclusion of the school year.
Ritenour was Wagner’s first head coaching job after a successful run as an assistant coach that included stops at University City, Hazelwood West, CBC and Lutheran North, where he served as the offensive coordinator for the Crusaders’ 2019 state championship squad.
Sikeston went 2-8 in the 2020 season. The Bulldogs opened the season with wins over Caruthersville and Dexter but then lost their final eight games, including a 43-0 playoff loss to North County. The Bulldogs’ last winning season came in 2016 when they went 7-4.
