The San Diego Section often gets overlooked because the Southern Section is much larger and features some of the top programs in the nation.
But San Diego features excellent programs who can compete with some of the top teams in the state like Helix, Oceanside, Lincoln and Torrey Pines.
Below is a list of the top 10 defensive backs in San Diego’s class of 2022. This list is alphabetical by last name.
Dasean Burdette, Eastlake, Chula Vista
Burdette is a lengthy cornerback who excels in multiple coverages. He is 6-foot-1 which helps him in man coverage in the redzone, although Eastlake does not play a lot of man coverage. Burdette can cover guys in the slot as well as out wide although when he is in the slot he’s usually in zone coverage. He could also be used a safety in cover 2 because he closes to the ball quickly and does a solid job not drawing penalties.

Josh Davis, Carlsbad, Carlsbad
Davis really sticks out on film when you watch the Carlsbad defense. He had 72 tackles, 2 for a loss and 2 interceptions as a sophomore last season. He is good as a single-high safety in cover 1 and also excels in cover 2 because he is aggressive and closes to the ball quickly. He sometimes blitzes and is a fantastic tackler. He was an impact player as a sophomore on a team that made it to the Open Division championship game.
Ashaun Duncan-Claybon, Morse, San Diego
Duncan-Claybon is a safety/linebacker hybrid type guy who does his best work defending the outside run game. He has great natural football instincts and shuts down sweeps and options frequently. He moves around the field a lot and has really good speed. Not a lot of pass coverage on his highlight film but he does a good job in man coverage and has the instincts to pick up zone coverages quickly. He transferred to Morse from Castle Park, where he had 43 tackles, 4 sacks and an interception as a sophomore.

Jahlil Florence, Lincoln, San Diego
Florence impressed scouts at the National Preps Showcase in San Diego earlier this month. He had the fasted 40 time of the day and was named defensive MVP. He is 6-foot-2 or 6-foot-1 depending on which coaches you believe and is around 180 pounds. He is going to blow up as a prospect once he gets some varsity game film at Lincoln and keeps performing well at showcases. Florence has an offer from Morgan State but will have double-digit offers by the fall.

Tony Galeano, Oceanside, Oceanside
Galeano saw his playing time increase as the season went on at Oceanside and proved that his speed translates well to the varsity level. He quickly showed that he belonged on the field with the top players in San Diego. He is not a big guy at 5-foot-9, but reads defenses well and his speed makes him effective in coverage, even against bigger receivers. Galeano recovered a big fumble at the goal line in the CIF Regional championship game against Corona del Mar.
