While there are still some late signings coming in for the class of 2021, it’s time to look deeper into the class of 2022.
The San Diego Section often gets overlooked because the Southern Section is much larger and features some of the top programs in the nation.
But San Diego features excellent programs who can compete with some of the top teams in the state like Helix, Oceanside, Lincoln and Torrey Pines.
Below is a list of the top 10 defensive backs in San Diego’s class of 2022. This list is alphabetical by last name.
Here is part one of the top 10 defensive backs in San Diego’s class of 2022.
Wyatt Gardner, Torrey Pines, San Diego
Gardner is just one of those really good athletes who can do anything he is asked. On offense, he is a really good route runner and has good hands. On defense, he is a ball-hawk, can cover almost anyone in man coverage, and can tackle. Torrey Pines plays a lot of cover 3 but that doesn’t stop Gardner from blowing up short passing routes against it. He has improved his strength with the long offseason and is fun to watch on

Omar Hammond, Patrick Henry, San Diego
Hammond only got to play four games as a sophomore due to a PCL injury but he showed that he has the athleticism to play with anybody. He is primarily a receiver but also plays safety. As a safety he takes good pursuit angles in the running game and is a very good tackler. He has good hands and can make difficult plays for a safety. He looks kind of raw and inexperienced on film but he has been working hard in the long offseason with Team Makasi and excelling at camps. It will be fun to see how the long offseason helped him prepare for a possible season.

Tre Hammork, Morse, San Diego
He is one of the best athletes in his class and it shows up on film. Hammork makes plays in the kicking game and because he has hands he is a dangerous cornerback. There is a play on his highlight film where he is playing man coverage, the offense runs a smash route, his man runs a five yard hitch and the quarterback throws the deep corner and Hammork sinks back 10 more yards and makes the interception. He is one of the few people on this list who can make that play.

Matthew Sanford, Santa Fe Christian, Solana Beach
The Santa Fe Christian coaching staff smartly puts Sanford all over the field. He is primarily a free safety but can play corner, be an edge blitzer and is a good contain man on kickoffs. Last season, Santa Fe Christian played St. Margaret’s of San Juan Capistrano and Sanford was tasked with covering two receivers, one of which got a Division 1 scholarship and the other is currently at Mater Dei fielding SEC offers, and he held his own against those guys. He should get some FBS offers and he is a really versatile high school player.

Jalil TuckerJalilTucker6'0" | ATHLincoln | 2022StateCA, Lincoln, San Diego
I know I said earlier that this list is alphabetical and not rankings per se, but Tucker is the best player on this list. He is the best two-way player in the county and colleges have taken notice. He holds 19 offers including Miami, San Diego State, BYU, USC, Nebraska, Arizona State, Utah, Oregon, Oregon State, Utah Washington State and Michigan. He is a track guy but unlike most track guys he has agility and natural football skills to match. Tucker runs great routes on offense, has the athleticism to cover anyone in man coverage and his real asset is he covers so much of the field in zone coverage. One of the few corners who actually can cover and entire third of the field in cover 3 and make big plays. Lincoln is full of young talent and Tucker may be the most intriguing of their talented roster.
