Baton Rouge-based Kream Elite partnered up with the Bootleggers to host a tryout Jan. 10 at Belaire High School in Baton Rouge.
A handful of the top performers included:
Austin Jake Guillory — 6-0, 170 DB — Newman
The young cornerback was among a few sophomores to stand out and could be an under-the-radar candidate to break out on the recruiting trail over the next two years as he continues to develop. Guillory is a long athlete smooth and technically sound in coverage for his age who appears locked in on getting as much work on his craft this offseason as possible.
Patrick LeBranch III — 5-9, 170 ATH — John Curtis
The quick-footed sophomore gave defensive backs fits with his route-rutting and cuts, which have started to catch the attention of some colleges around the southeast, and also showed toughness for his size to both fight through physical presses off the line and to seek repetitions against the best competition as frequently as possible.
Jonathan Swift — 6-1, 190 QB — Central (Baton Rouge)
The frigid, damp day did few favors for quarterbacks and wide receivers already dealing with minimal familiarity or chemistry. The Wildcats’ 2022 standout took what the defense gave in 7-on-7 matchups and showed one of the afternoon’s better arms on a couple tight-window throws.
Tamaj Vergin — 5-11, 170 WR — A.J. Ellender
The explosive sophomore may have had the highest ceiling of any athlete on hand with an ability to get behind defenders without exception and appeared to even somewhat surprise himself with a couple impressive grabs, including a one-handed touchdown in stride in the back of the end zone. Vergin is just starting to realize his potential, with a Mississippi State offer on the heels of the tryout helping to start opening his eyes.
Colby Ziegler — 6-0, 175 ATH — Lakeshore
The younger brother of former Titans star Cullen Ziegler is an athletic playmaker all over the field for his high school team. He focused on offense during the tryout and showed some of the tools that have helped him to some early success as a receiver, but still has big strides ahead as he does a better job off the line — and really on either side as he continues to get reps and experience.
