Maalik Murphy Maalik Murphy 6'5" | 225 lbs | QB Serra - Gardena | 2022 State CA from Serra (Gardena) verbally committed to Texas on Saturday.
Murphy is a guy with a ton of upside who has not yet showed how good he can be on the field. This pickup for Texas is purely based on his tools and what he has shown in camps with his raw talent.
He is between 6-foot-4 and 6-foot-5 and has one of the best arms in the region. Coaches and scouts rave about his intangibles and say he is a natural leader and works hard.
On the field, he only completed 45 percent of his passes for 305 yards, but showed he can complete passes with accuracy on the far side of the field and can extend plays with his legs.
Murphy is the fifth player in Texas’ 2022 recruiting class and the first one from outside the state of Texas. Charles Wright from Austin (Texas) is the only quarterback in the Longhorns’ 2021 class.

Fresno State gets early start on 2022 class
Fresno State landed three Northern California prospects in the class of 2022 in the past week.
Simeon Harris is a 5-foot-11 athlete from Bethel High in Vallejo. He is a receiver and defensive back who will likely be a defensive back in college. He is undersized but will put on some muscle and can cover guys split out wide or in the slot. His mother was a former cheerleader at Fresno State and he has developed a strong connection with the coaching staff.
Jomarion Briggs Jomarion Briggs 6'2" | 175 lbs | DB Lincoln | 2022 State CA is another defensive back who can play corner and possibly safety as well. He is from Lincoln High in Stockton and performed well at the National Preps Showcase. He ran a laser timed 4.57 40-yard dash which was one of the fastest in the showcase.
Miles Bailey is a defensive end from Benicia. He is 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds and will likely add 20 or 30 pounds and remain a defensive end in college. He could also play outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme. He had 30 tackles, seven for a loss and four sacks and was part of an excellent sophomore class at Benicia with Dominic Spivey and Janari Boone.
Class of 2021 sleeper commits
Aric Eades from San Joaquin Memorial in Fresno announced his commitment to Black Hills State last Wednesday.
He is a defensive end who could also be a 3-technique if he adds a few more pounds. He has great pass rush moves and tallied 12 sacks last season. He has inside and outside pass rush moves and his skills translate well to the college level.
Black Hills State has been somewhat active in recruiting players in California. They have also offered Irvine receiver Kade Zimmerman.

Oregon is a “dream offer” for top San Diego prospect
Zach Rowell, a defensive end from Torrey Pines (Encinitas), landed an offer from Oregon this past week, which he called his dream school.
His stock has risen rapidly this offseason. He was not on some recruiting boards after the 2019 season ended and now he is a top 100 prospect in California’s 2022 class according to 247Sports.
Rowell is 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds and had a great sophomore season at Torrey Pines, tallying 44 tackles and four sacks. He impressed scouts at the Team Makasi Showcase late last year and has added five offers in 2021.
“Oregon is my dream offer so this is huge for me,” Rowell told Greg Biggins of 247Sports. “I’m still in shock right now. I’ve literally dreamed about this moment my whole life and I’m so fired up right now.”
“Growing up, I loved Oregon and their style of play. I love the culture of the program and have always wanted this offer. I’m building a great relationship with coach Joe (Salave’a) and look forward to talking with coach Cristobal at some point and connecting with him as well.”

Orange County sleeper headed to Southern Oregon
Elliot DeGroote of San Juan Hills (San Juan Capistrano) committed to Southern Oregon on Tuesday according to the team’s Twitter feed.
DeGroote often lines up as a nosetackle or a 3-technique and is very aggressive. He had 50 tackles, 11 for a loss, 3 sacks, 11 hurries, 2 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries and an interception that he returned for a touchdown which earned him First Team All-Sea View League and All-CIF honors.
He is 6-foot-3 and around 260 pounds with good quickness for an interior defensive lineman. San Juan Hills is slated to play in the tougher South Coast League this season and it will be interesting how he does against top teams like Mission Viejo and San Clemente, if there is a season.
DeGroote was a key member of the San Juan Hills team that won the CIF-SS Division 4 championship in 2019.
