Every now and then we are fortunate enough to get the opportunity to see some truly spectacular players. Players that can change the landscape of the game with the ball in their hands. Here are some of the best playmakers in the Baltimore County area!
Rodney Nelson, 5’9 190 RB – Franklin
If it is true that speed kills, Rodney Nelson playing out of Franklin has quite the hit list. The junior logged a 4.34 not too long ago, those numbers are not enough to really get across the speed factor Rodney possesses. This insane speed can be seen when he out runs the entire defense after taking the handoff up the middle or in major chunk plays like the 80 yard rush he had last weekend in a game where Nelson made a couple trips to the end zone with over 150 total yards. Rodney uses his speed and surprising strength to get through spaces many players would never even realize were there, in doing so makes himself the biggest threat on the field when the ball touches his gloves.
Jonathan Thompson, 6’1 165 WR – Dulaney
Taking it outside of the numbers we can take a moment to look at Jonathan Thompson, junior receiver for the Dulaney Lions in Towson, MD. Thompson also starting on varsity his sophomore year, has already come out red hot this season, racking up four touchdowns through two games. Thompson can be seen using his lengthy frame and jumping ability to go and get the ball from high in the sky. Arguably with space to put on weight going forward, Jonathan is not one to shy away from the true physicality of the game whether it be a jump ball in the end zone or a pancake block to free up another teammate to make a spectacular play. Thompson obviously has room for improvement, as does anyone with anything in life but to have another year to improve even more, there should certainly be eyes on Jonathan’s rise.
Kamar Cosby, 6’1 200 QB – Owings Mills
It would be unfortunate if I was to complete this list and not include at least one quarterback in it. Do not be fooled, Kamar is not the average quarterback by far. Standing at 6’1 200 in his junior year I would no the surprised if these numbers slightly trended upward in the not so distant future. That being said, Cosby definitely has a lot going for him in terms of what you would like to see in a college prospect. Beyond his physical traits you will find yourself staring at a player who has that special thing about them, where they refuse to give up on any single play. This kind of drive can be seen from Kamar when he is on the field completing passes into double coverage, while being pulled to the turf. Sounds a little familiar right? A little too early for those kind of comparisons but Kamar Cosby is a name you should not soon forget.
Keenan Gilchrist, 5’9 176 RB – Concordia Prep
Another true speedster we find ourselves discussing in Keenan Gilchrist. Keenan is the starting back in Concordia Prep’s offense and is a dangerous weapon within a truly stacked offense. While some may see Keenan as undersized, his strengths far outweigh any weaknesses you could attempt to find in his game. With a clear understanding for the game Keenan seems to make the right decision whenever the ball is in his hands. A patient back is another way you could describe Gilchrist, as he can be seen being almost as precise as a sniper with his first cut through the line of scrimmage and from that point if you happen to be apart of that defense you better hope he does not make it to the next level. Combining the raw talent with the precision and the field intelligence Keenan has and you have yourself a star in the making.
Isaiah Armstrong, 5’9 175 ATH – Perry Hall
A jack of all trades is the only way we should refer to this Perry Hall Gator from now on. I had no choice but to list Isaiah as an athlete because he spent majority of his sophomore year taking snaps from the quarterback position on varsity but has since moved into a more traditional running back role since then. Even before this year, Armstrong’s abilities were on full display as he sliced through his fair share of Maryland defenses in a read option focused offense last season. Now that he is back taking handoffs predominantly, his skillset is on full display more than ever. Isaiah is a packaged deal with his speed and strength, something that seems to make him nearly impossibly to bring down on first contact, Armstrong is beginning to look like someone who will force the light to shine on him going forward.
