Continue ReadingThese five Class of 2023 defensive backs have the potential to be ball hawks in future seasons as they continue to face the tough task of facing down wide receivers and reading quarterbacks that are becoming more mobile. These players have already shown some promise and that is why they need to be looked at next season.
1. Tyler Turner – Brennan High School (San Antonio, TX)
Not only did Turner lead the team with five interceptions, but he was also second in total tackles with 109, according to his Hudl profile. He also had one fumble recovery, according to MaxPreps. Considering Turner was already a team-leader last season, the sky is the limit for him next season especially with a team like Brennan which experienced a lot of success. Turner already has a hot start to his high school football career and more age and experience will only help with that.
2. Houston Hendrix – Boerne High School (Boerne, TX)
Hendrix also led his team with three interceptions for 66 yards while also having six pass deflections, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. He also accounted for 70 total tackles with 41 being solo. Much like Turner, Hendrix had a lot of success like season and is already on a path for more next season considering Boerne had a great year. One of Hendrix’s best performances came against Burnet when he had two interceptions and seven total tackles. Keep an eye out for him next season.
3. Tyreeq-Styles Obichere – East View High School (Georgetown, TX)
Although East View enjoyed a moderately successful season, Obichere walked away with three interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. The Patriots made it pretty deep into the playoffs, but East View is a team that can always remain a dark horse and that is thanks to an impressive defense. With a few tweaks, and continued experience for Obichere, East View could rise to a lethal team and Obichere could rise to a lethal defensive back who has already shown his potential.
4. Theo Anderson – Hutto High School (Hutto, TX)
Hutto had a disappointing season, but there is some young bright spots. One of those bright spots is Anderson, who had three interceptions, one pass deflection and one forced fumble. Alongside a player which has already been featured on these watchlists, sophomore linebacker Brody Bujnoch, Hutto has great potential if executed correctly and both of these players can lead that charge. Keep an eye out for this growing Hutto defense.
5. Cole Canaday – Anderson High School (Austin, TX)
Anderson struggled with a 1-8 record, but Canaday had himself a season with three interceptions for 148 yards, five pass deflections and a fumble recovery. While also leading the team in interceptions, Canaday also had 42 total tackles and averaged six tackles per game. Canaday’s best game was against McCallum when he had two interceptions for 124 yards and two pass deflections. His average yards on those interceptions was 62. He also walked away from that game with 10 total tackles. While Anderson has a lot of work to do as a team, the secondary looks promising with Canaday back there.
