Continue ReadingComing home for Kenard Lang means a lot. The former University of Miami All-American and NFL All-Pro has come back to where it all began.
The one-time standout at his alma mater, Orlando Evans, where he helped the Trojans to a state title, Lang comes back to find a program that can use his experience and wisdom, building this program back.
Lang, who was FIU’s defensive line coach for the past three seasons, is happy to be back – with friends and family hoping that he can work the magic he did as a player.
Lang is certainly no coaching stranger in Orange County – having a 52-44 record as a head coach and is accustomed to facing challenges. In his first two head coaching stints, he took over teams coming off one-win seasons and compiled winning records at Orlando Jones and Apopka Wekiva. He went 30-25 with four district runner-up finishes in five seasons (2008-12) at Jones, which had posted just one winning season in the previous 14 years. Lang left the Tigers for Wekiva, where he went 19-12 in three seasons (2013-15).
Lang was head coach at Oak Ridge in 2016, going 3-7.
While it was hard to leave FIU, where he worked for head coach Butch Davis, who was his college coach at UM and his coach with the Cleveland Browns (2002-04), it was a move that he felt was best for he and his family.
Evans was 2-5 last season, but the team was competitive while playing a challenging schedule. The Trojans’ losses included a 27-26 heartbreaker against Lake Mary and a 34-32 playoff loss to Altamonte Springs Lake Brantley.
SOME GIFTED PLAYERS TO WORK WITH
Lang knows that any job that requires building back a solid pipeline is never easy. He also understands that playing winning football also helps with the process.
