The outside players are expected to cover receivers while the inside guys are expected to track down athletic quarterbacks. Linebackers have become a crucial part of the team as defenses continue to improve. Safeties in the box have taken some pressure off of the inside linebackers, allowing them to be a bit more aggressive as pass rushers. It’s an interesting position that will continue to evolve in the coming years.
Here are some of the top linebackers in the state of Michigan for the 2021 MHSAA season:
Joshua Burnham Joshua Burnham 6'3" | 205 lbs | LB Traverse City Central | 2022 State MI , LB, Traverse City Central
The Traverse City Central star is making his big college announcement on March 17th. At 6-4, 215 pounds, Burnham presents bigger than conventional linebacker size and adds solid instincts. Burnham has the range to track down ball carriers on the outside and can also get it done in pass coverage. He has the size and speed to move up front or stay at linebacker in the future.
Michael Williams II Michael Williams II 6'3" | 225 lbs | LB West Bloomfield | 2022 State MI , LB, West Bloomfield
At 6’3″ 220 lbs, you can see Williams strength on film. He’s durable and can rush the passer as well as protect against the run. The senior linebacker is a relentless pursuer of the football and works harder than anyone on the field. He’s a fun player to study and is set for a huge 2021.

Tag Bonnema, LB, Zeeland East High School
Tag has tremendous vision and can fly to the football. It was impressive with how he can track the ball down from the weak side and still make the play. He has the burst to the football that you just don’t see in every linebacker.
