Westminster’s gameplan was clear, pound the ball with Erick Stranko and see if Liberty could hold up. For Liberty, it was a much more balanced gameplan. They had multiple big plays through the air called back for penalties. Tommy Nelson was the main back used through the game and broke some big runs to spark Liberty’s second half. Here’s a more detailed look at the offensive standouts from this game.
Erick Stranko, Westminster, RB, 6’1″ 205lbs, 2021
A 2019 First Team All-Metro selection, Erick looked in midseason form. He went over 100 yds and had 2 TD’s, with the bulk of his production in the second half. This highlighted the night because it showed off his conditioning. Throughout the game, he was consistently carrying multiple Liberty defenders for extra yards. Even though he had two fumbles, the mental toughness he showed afterward showed the character he possesses. Stranko clearly took advantage of the extended offseason, and it showed. He is definitely one to follow during this short-season.
Jack Pellicciotti, Liberty, QB, 6’1″ 190lbs, 2023
Jack flashed the tools of a future leader for Liberty’s offense. What stood out the most was his ability to throw with great touch and accuracy. Even though it was called back on a holding penalty, his best throw of the day came in the first half on a post-route. He hit the WR 45 yards downfield, in stride, which allowed him to get another 40-yards after the catch. Most of the day he hit his receivers in stride, with very catchable balls. What also stood out was the leadership he showed on the sideline. He took accountability for the interceptions he threw and was always picking up his teammates. Jack is a young, impressive QB who will be one to watch in the class of 2023
Tommy Nelson, Liberty, RB, 5’7″ 175lbs, 2022
Like Erick Stranko for Westminster, Tommy looked like he was in midseason form. Running for over 100 yards and a TD, he impressed with his running style. He showed good open-field speed and an ability to make something out of nothing. Most impressive, though, was his build and willingness to fight for more yards. Parents said he had put on muscle and worked this offseason to improve his body to handle the constant contact a RB takes. This showed with numerous runs finishing with him falling forward. Nelson played bigger than his size and used Friday to show out for everyone in attendance.
