The list is lead by potential five-star recruit Walker Howard of St. Thomas More. There are quite a few sleepers on this list, however, who could sneak up on some people. Without further ado, here are Louisiana’s top 2022 quarterbacks.
1. Walker Howard, 6’2, 185, St. Thomas More
One of the most highly touted quarterback prospects in the country, who has quickly risen up recruiting rankings after an impressive junior season. Walker is an exceptional arm talent who can make most throws on a rope. He shows no issues fitting the football into tight windows and can adlib when under pressure. His accuracy and timing are downright special, as he consistently places the ball right on his target’s numbers. LSU got a very good one.
2. Landry Lyddy, 6′, 190, Calvary Baptist
Lyddy was a stat machine in 2020, throwing for 3,566 yards, 44 TD’s, and just 3 interceptions. He also completed 71% of his passes as a junior on his way to winning a state championship. To me, he doesn’t get the recruiting attention he deserves. This is a young man who can make throws off different platforms and out of multiple arm angles. He glides up into the pocket with defensive ends bearing down and can make throws downfield vertically. The pure arm strength is there, as is the clean footwork in the pocket.
3. Zeon Chriss, 6’2, 200, Madison Prep Academy
This is another gifted quarterback prospect who also led his team to a state championship as a junior. Chriss is a dual-threat who can not only beat you with his arm but also his legs. He’s outstanding in the pocket against free rushers and can evade tackle attempts more like a running back than a quarterback. He’s fearless too and is willing to take a shot from defenders if it means hitting his target downfield. Opposing defensive coordinators should be cognisant of letting Chriss outside the pocket. I think he could be at his best when having the option to run or throw. He’s nasty in the open-field as a runner and will make you pay if you don’t get him down early.
4. Garrett Mmahat, 6’2, 180, Brother Martin
A poised quarterback prospect who refuses to get rattled when defenses bring pressure. Garrett has the capability of throwing receivers open and can adjust his ball placement based on safety’s post-snap alignment. Throwing on the run seems second nature to him as he was able to complete passes on all three levels. He’s exceptional off play-action and lives for naked rollouts outside the pocket. Mmahat is a solid runner who can make you pay if you don’t respect your rush lanes.
5. Calep Jacob, 6’1, 170, Loreauville
Man, is this kid fun to watch on film. Jacob is a tough runner when he gets past the line with outstanding body control. He’s shown a big arm, too, and can place the go ball right in the receiver’s breadbasket in stride. He can add another dimension to an offense with the quarterback run game and has shown that he’s a master of running the counter-read. He can scoot, too, clocking a 4.63 40 yard dash time, and that speed shows up on tape. Jacob has an uncanny ability to just make something happen out of nothing, and it could be what separates him from a whole slew of other quarterback prospects.
