John Clay, RB, 5-11, 185, Class of 2023, Brentwood
Just a sophomore, Clay had a career game in Brentwood’s 39-14 win at Bayless.
The young running back rushed for 232 yards and four touchdowns on 19 carries.
Through two games, Clay has rushed for 299 yards and six touchdowns on 25 carries, an average of 12 yards per attempt.
As a freshman, back in 2019, Clay led the Eagles in rushing with 700 yards and scored four touchdowns.
Armani Turner, WR, 5-8, 160, Class of 2022, Hazelwood Central
Turner has been one of the area’s best players through the first two weeks of the spring season.
On Friday night, the undersized playmaker caught eight passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns to fuel the Hawks’ 30-8 win at Ritenour. He also had a long touchdown run called back because of a holding penalty downfield.
In Central’s season opener against McCluer North, Turner caught three passes for 38 yards and two touchdowns. So though games, he has 11 catches for 155 yards and four touchdowns.
Turner’s two-game film shows his ability to run past defenders downfield, turn short routes into big plays and also shows his ability to create chunk plays in the running game with end arounds.
Charles Johnson Jr., RB, 5-5, 150, Class of 2022, Pattonville
Johnson was a driving force in Pattonville’s 40-20 win over Hazelwood East.
Johnson scored three times and racked up 126 yards rushing on 23 carries, averaging 5.48 yards per carry. His three touchdown runs came on short-yardage situations in the first, second and fourth quarters.
Through two games, Johnson has run for 300 yards and six touchdowns on 49 carries.
Johnson is a smaller back, but he’s quick and elusive and strong.
Logan Williams, QB, 6-2, 225, Class of 2021, Pattonville
Williams has been one of the area’s top quarterbacks so far this spring and has put up big numbers through the air and on the ground.
Against Hazelwood East, Williams completed 19 of 29 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 82 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.
Through the first two weeks, Williams has completed 67 percent of his passes for 330 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 148 yards and four scores on 37 carries.
Mekhi Holmes, QB, 6-3, 180, Class of 2022, Hazelwood East
Holmes, a left-handed quarterback with dual-threat ability, accounted for three touchdowns, two rushing and one passing, in a losing effort for the Spartans against Pattonville.
Holmes scored on a 5-yard run in the second quarter and a 3-yard run in the third quarter. He then connected on a 27-yard touchdown pass midway through the third quarter that gave Hazelwood East a 21-20 lead going into the fourth.
