Today we move over to South Dakota’s second-largest city, Rapid City, where we look at six quarterbacks that make our Rapid City QB rankings.
HOW DID WE MAKE OUR LIST?
I am a firm believer that the film doesn’t lie, so of course, pulling the film on each of these six quarterbacks was the first route I took. I found out pretty quickly that not every one of these prospects had film via Hudl, etc., so I went to option two, chatting with coaches and other inside sources from the Rapid City area.
The programs we pulled the film from are: Rapid City Stevens, Rapid City Central, Rapid City St. Thomas More, Rapid City Christian, Douglas, Custer, Belle Fourche, Sturgis, Deadwood-Lead, and Spearfish.
THE CITY RANKINGS
These are six prospects that make our Rapid City Area QB Rankings; I hope you enjoy my analysis on each prospect!
6: Kellen Weber, Rapid City St. Thomas More (2022)
Weber has some tough film to evaluate as the quality isn’t great & you can’t see the full scope of his game at quarterback. What I did pick up from his film is he’s the definition of tailback at the quarterback position, as he rarely throws the ball but does have some decent footwork when dodging in between would-be tacklers. Weber will need some updated film to raise his stock as a senior on our city rankings.
5: Ryan Wetch, Rapid City Central (2024)
Wetch will be one of the Cobblers’ options at quarterback in 2021, along with Cael Meisman Cael Meisman 6'3" | 180 lbs | WR Rapid City Stevens | 2024 State SD , the little brother of Black Hills State, commit Kohl Meisman Kohl Meisman 6'6" | 185 lbs | QB RC Central | 2021 State . Wetch is described to be extremely raw, and it will be interesting to see the Cobblers QB room over the next several months, with the bulk of their talent coming from the Class of 2024.
4: Jed Jenson, Rapid City Stevens (2023)
There is little to no film on Jenson, but I have gotten some inside notes on his game, along with some numbers from his other sports. Jenson has a solid pocket presence when the Raiders can keep him protected. When he has the time he needs, he has good accuracy on his ball. He’ll need to develop a better extension of the plays and, hopefully, can improve his strength in the next few years.

3: Rocke Rainey, Deadwood-Lead (2022)
Rainey is a quite strong runner when he leaves the pocket and can accumulate yards after contact or use his burst to get loose. Rainey, in my eyes, needs to develop less loft on his deep ball as that will be a ball that could get picked off if he takes his game to the next level. I will be interested to see how Rainey does without WR Mekieh Hon Mekieh Hon 6'4" | 165 lbs | WR Lead-Deadwood | 2021 State next season.

2: Sterling Sword, Custer (2022)
Sword stuck out to me most on film with his great ability to extend plays with his legs and can throw a decent ball on the run. Sword does a nice job with his versatility as he can also use his quick release from the pocket. In my eyes, what separated Sword from our #1 (and it was close) was the touch on the football and his precision. He certainly has a great chance to move up to my #1 spot when we do our next update!
1: Owen Cass, Sturgis (2023)
Cass seems to have the best touch on the football out of the film I have been able to find from the Rapid City Area. Cass has a quick release on his ball. Cass shows his best throws inside 20 yards and is an efficient thrower over the middle of the field. He shows some of the best poise from the younger breed of QB1s from the area.
