Prep Redzone Oklahoma was once again on hand in Dallas for the True Buzz Invitational 7v7 tournament. We were there from start to finish and saw some fantastic playmakers throughout the two days in DeSoto. Today, we’re taking a look at a few players who had breakout weekends and became names that you should remember going into the rest of the offseason. Make sure you check out Michael’s Top 18U Performers, Jake’s Top 18U Performers, and our Top 15U Performers from the weekend if you haven’t seen them already, and follow our Twitter account @PrepRedzoneOK for all your Oklahoma high school football news and updates. Let’s jump into it!
Ty Smithton – 2022 WR – Stillwater – Played with Sooner7 Black 18U
Ty played well in the Sooner7 Classic in Broken Arrow a few weeks ago, but we were very impressed with Ty’s performance on Saturday in Dallas. The 5’10″ wideout ran some great routes on underneath and out concepts, was strong at the catch point, and showed an encouraging ability to track and adjust to the ball while it was in the air. With all the talent Stillwater loses from their 2020 roster, Smithton could be primed for a big year if he can continue to develop over the off-season.
Gavin Frakes Gavin Frakes 6'4" | 210 lbs | QB Norman North | 2022 State OK – 2022 QB – Norman North – Played with Sooner7 Gray 18U
Gavin was not at the last tournament in BA, so we were excited to see him up close and personal for the first time this off-season.The Sooner7 Gray team had an up and down weekend but we liked what we saw from Gavin in the reps he got over the weekend. He did not have a ton of deep completions from what we saw but he had some nice throws on some intermediate and crossing routes, showing that he has the touch, timing, and arm strength to make all the throws you need in a 7v7 environment. Frakes’ recruiting has already taken off a little bit with offers from a few ivy league schools, but that list of offers could grow exponentially by the start of next season as he gets more reps and exposure at these camps and tournaments
Da’Monn Sanders Da’Monn Sanders 6'3" | TE Union | 2022 State OK – 2022 WR/TE – Union – Played with Sooner7 Black 18U
Similar to Smithon, Sanders was at the Sooner7 Classic in BA but really broke out in a big way in Dallas. Sooner7 Black played him in the slot for most of the weekend and Sanders thrived on shorter routes and worked the middle of the field really well. Sanders isn’t the fastest pass catcher at these tournaments at 6’3″ 215 Lbs., but he uses his frame really well to gain leverage on defenders and has soft hands for a big man. If Union can get their passing game going again in 2021 Sanders has a chance to be one of their top RedZone targets.
