Lubbock was well represented, with Estacado, Coronado, Monterey, Frenship, and Cooper all having students attend, joined by players from Amarillo, San Angelo, Childress, and McCamey.
Quarterbacks
QB MVP – Jess Hoel – Abernathy 2022 – 6’0 175lbs
After splitting time his sophomore season as a receiver and the backup QB, Hoel was handed the reigns to the Abernathy offense in 2020. He threw for 1319 yards and 17 touchdowns, adding another 1143 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing. Hoel displays confidence in the pocket and has solid movement skills in the pocket to avoid the rush and scramble to extend the play or pick up yards. He delivers an accurate ball from both the pocket and on the move and has the arm strength to push the ball outside the numbers and down the field. St. Norbert College recently offered Jess, but that is the only current offer he holds.
Holt Gibson – Lubbock Cooper 2022 – 6’3 200lbs
Gibson has the build of the prototypical quarterback at 6’3 200lbs with a thick lower half. His arm strength really flashes when driving the ball outside the numbers. While he might be more of a pocket passer, he has the pocket awareness and maneuverability to work around the rush.
Colby Sims – Lubbock Estacado 2022 – 5’10 165lbs
Sims is a true athlete playing quarterback, seeing time at quarterback, receiver, and special teams in 2020. Heading into his senior season, he will likely be focused more on just being a quarterback, where Estacado would be wise to take advantage of his athleticism. At the skills camp, Sims delivered some of the prettiest deep passes in the one-on-one drills.
Rodney Hall – Odessa Permian 2023 – 5’11 160lbs
Hall is another athlete at the quarterback position. He spent more time at slot receiver as a sophomore but looks to take over the starting quarterback spot as a junior. Rodney’s skills were on display when Permian had him work the read-option, and on double passes. He throws a nice deep ball and has the movement skills to extend plays or pick up rushing yards when needed. 2021 should be a good year for Hall to show off his Kyler Murray-esque skillset.
DJ Williams – Lubbock Monterey 2024 – 6’2 180lbs
Williams is only a freshman, but he had some of the best touch on the deep passes at the camp. This youngster is definitely a guy to keep an eye on when he gets to the varsity ranks.
Receivers
Camp MVP/Receiver MVP – Matthew Rosas – McCamey 2023 – 5’7 145lbs
Rosas stole the show at this camp. His quickness at the line of scrimmage to avoid the jam and his excellent change of direction skills allowed him to separate from everyone with ease. Matt showed off his body control while adjusting to high or wide passes, and his soft hands reeled in almost every pass that came his way. After scoring 10 touchdowns as a sophomore, Rosas will look to explode onto the scene with an increased workload in his junior season.
Kaydyn Moore – Brownfield 2023 – 6’0 188lbs
Moore spent a good portion of the camp showing off his ability to win on deep routes, tracking the ball well, and displaying the body control to adjust to the pass in the air. His good hands allowed him to reel in most of the passes thrown his way, even on a few occasions with a defender draped all over him.
Lamont Nickleberry – Childress 2023 – 5’10 150lbs
Nickleberry is a smooth route runner that makes it look effortless. His 5’10 150lb frame is long and lanky, but he definitely has some room to fill out some more. Lamont’s long arms and leaping ability allow him to go up and over defenders to make the tough catches downfield. He also provides some kick return ability.
Caleb Madden – Wildorado 2023 – 6’3 180lbs
Madden made a living making the tough catches on inside routes with a defender on his back all camp long. While playing 6 man football will make his transition to the next level tough to project, his size and willingness to get the tough yards inside will make him an asset.
