I got a chance to evaluate and break down the film on the top 5 ranked ’23 WR’s in the state, and it was highly impressive. The talent in Arizona High School football has been on the rise for years now, and it shows no signs of slowing down. Take a look at my analysis on the top 5 talented WR’s in the 2023 class:
Kyler Kasper Kyler Kasper 6'5" | 195 lbs | WR Williams Field | 2023 AZ , 6’5″ 185lbs, Williams Field HS
Film: https://www.hudl.com/profile/11265544/Kyler-Kasper
Kasper sizes up with tremendous length and size and is your prototypical X or Z. He is a power 5 prospect and already holds around 9 offers. He shows a nice burst off the LOS, and sets up his routes well. He is physical when facing press and doesn’t shy away from contact. Kasper holds strong route integrity and shows the ability to stack himself over DB’s. Kasper displays an excellent leaping ability with solid body control, with a strong ability to win contested catches. His technique and fluidity as a route runner is impressive. Kasper does a phenomenal job staying on and finishing blocks with violence. On film, he’s frequently taken opponents out of the play. He has a good football bloodline as his father Kevin was a standout at the University of Iowa, and a WR in the NFL for around 7 years.
Blaise Nelson Blaise Nelson 5'11" | 160 lbs | WR Valley Vista | 2023 State AZ , 5’11″ 160lbs, Valley Vista HS
Film: https://www.hudl.com/profile/13062438/Blaise-Nelson
Nelson sizes up with a narrow frame. Valley Vista utilizes him as a slot and he was a young player that really stepped up during his sophomore campaign. Nelson is a pretty good route runner overall, and displays a nice stick at the top of his routes. He was extremely effective on corner routes and frequently generated separation and had multiple big catches. He shows soft hands and is going to be a very reliable target for Valley Vista for the next couple seasons. He has good speed now, but I expect him to really take his speed to the next level next season.
Micah Johnson Micah Johnson 6'3" | 185 lbs | WR Sunrise Mountain | 2023 State AZ , 6’2″ 175lbs, Sunrise Mountain HS
Film: https://www.hudl.com/profile/10229106/Micah-Johnson
Johnson sizes up with an athletic build with good length for a 6’2″ kid and helped Sunrise Mountain win the 5A State Championship. He shows a nice initial burst off the LOS, and was utilized in both the slot (2 WR and 3 WR sets) and on the outside. He is a definite mismatch in the slot against a cover down LB or SS with his athleticism. When facing press, he flashed a nice bend to dip and rip to generate a clean release. He possesses solid top end speed to take the top off defenses and will be a burner the next couple seasons. He’s shown the ability to win contested catches and is trending in the direction of a complete receiver. He could emphasize the stick at the top of routes a little more, but will be a very fun prospect to follow as he matures.
Drake Cluff Drake Cluff 5'10" | 165 lbs | WR American Leadership Academy (Queen Creek) | 2023 State AZ , 5’8″ 150lbs, ALA-Queen Creek
Film: https://www.hudl.com/profile/13566923/Drake-Cluff
Cluff’s size points to a slot at the next level, but plays both slot and the outsides for ALA-Queen Creek. He shows loose hips with good twitch and is going to be a big play threat for the next 2 seasons. He does a great job setting up his routes and is an explosive route runner overall. He runs up the DB’s toes to burst out of his stick, generating solid separation. He presses vertically very well and is very effective with double moves. He has soft hands with good body control all around. Despite his height, he’s shown a good leaping ability to go up and win contested catches. He projects to have a big junior year with standout QB Logan Hubler Logan Hubler 6'2" | 180 lbs | QB American Leadership Academy (Queen Creek) | 2022 State AZ throwing his way.
Carter Hancock Carter Hancock 5'11" | 160 lbs | WR Higley | 2023 State AZ , 5’11″ 160lbs, Higley HS
Film: https://www.hudl.com/profile/12942350/Carter-Hancock
Hancock is a clean route runner and has a natural ability for generating separation. He shows good physicality when facing physical DB’s, and holds route integrity very well. He does a good job staying on or getting back on his vertical stem when bumped off. Hancock catches the ball away from his body, and has shown the ability to make athletic catches as well. He’s shown solid balance after contact, as he flashed the ability to pick up solid chunks of yards after contact. He does a good job working levels during scramble drill, and looks to be a reliable target for Higley the next 2 years.
