Offensive Spotlight
Payton Barlow Payton Barlow 5'11" | 185 lbs | ATH Queen Creek | 2022 State AZ , RB, 6’0″ 175lbs, Queen Creek ’22
Film: https://www.hudl.com/profile/11612656/Payton-Barlow
Barlow is a 3 sport athlete (football, basketball, and track) and a big name to know out of the East Valley. He was a key player on both sides of the ball for Queen Creek. He ran for 799 yards and 5 TD’s, while adding another 211 yards and 1 TD receiving. He is a speedy back that can turn the game around in one play. Barlow shows an excellent stutter-go movement with excellent change of direction which frequently makes opponents miss. He is able to hit top speed quick and finish off big runs with that top end speed. He is a shifty ball carrier and a major threat in open space. If he can get his shoulders squared upfield, not many kids can hawk him down. As a pass catcher, he can run routes out of the backfield or split out wide, and has shown solid hands and is able to get upfield quickly after the catch. He is a two-way starter and a standout on both sides of the ball for Queen Creek, which should give him a major upside in his recruiting. He is part of a talented 2022 class at Queen Creek, and projects to have a breakout season this upcoming fall.
Defensive Spotlight
Jonathan Melgar, DL, 6’3″ 280lbs, Apollo HS ’22
Film: https://www.hudl.com/profile/13077990/jonathan-melgar
Melgar was a sleeper for Apollo, but he served his role well as he was able to rack up 26 tackles, 5 TFL’s, 2 sacks, and 6 hurries in an 8 game season. He sizes up with a thick and wide frame with good length. He was awarded 5A 1st Team DT this past season, and really shows a lot of potential. He has quick, athletic hands and was lethal with a swim move this past season. He shows solid strength all around with good athleticism for a kid his size. He does a good job overall of shooting gaps and uses his strength to make his way into the backfield. He identifies screens fairly well, as you will see around the 1:28 mark on his tape. He improved his bull rush and was able to overpower opponents and disrupt plays from even developing in the backfield. He handled double teams fairly well, and colleges will love his size and frame. He developed and mature more as the season went on, and has the potential to be a big name to watch this upcoming season his senior year if he can really lock in.
