It is a position that has evolved due to the spread offense and the ever-changing ways offensive geniuses come up with to attack their opponents. I have often viewed a DB as a hunter on the football field. As a hunter I know the importance of preparation and patience. I sometimes must anticipate what an animal might do for me to be successful and that is exactly what a DB must do every week for every opponent. The importance of studying film and learning opponent’s tendencies on offense are so important to the success a DB has. Sometimes a DB gets lucky being in the right place at the right time but more times than not, a DB is in the right place because he prepared the right way. Here are five DBs I believe fit that very description and will have great 2021 seasons.
Chaston Dockery Chaston Dockery 5'11" | 180 lbs | WR Lonoke | 2022 State AR – 2022 SS Lonoke Jackrabbits
Chaston is going into his senior year in a good place. During practice he faces probably one of the top 3 QBs in his conference which makes him better. Chaston stands at 5’11 and weighs in at 178 pounds. The one asset that really helps Chaston on the field is he runs a 4.7/40 and speed is a safety’s best weapon. Chaston’s Junior year he recorded 2 solo tackles, 12 TT, 1 FF, and 1 PD in just one game played. Looking back at his available film Chaston is all over the field. He has great vision and can high point the ball as good as anyone I have seen. Chaston hits awfully hard often knocking the ball loose. Chaston is particularly good in man-to-man coverage and making the best of his opportunities. Chaston is also a good open field tackler. Colleges everywhere should be coming to see Chaston early and often this season.
Ricardo Gonzalez Ricardo Gonzalez 5'7" | 175 lbs | LB Springdale | 2022 State AR – 2022 SS Springdale Bulldogs
Ricardo plays in the 7A West, a tough division with some of Arkansas’s best athletes. Ricardo stands at 5’9 and weighs in at 185 pounds. Ricardo runs a 4.9/40 and its shows on film. Playing in 9 games in 2020 he recorded 29 solo tackles, 60 TT, 2 TFLs, 1 PD, 1 FR, 1 QBH, and 2 INTs. Ricardo is a solid DB and plays the SS position very well. He loves to hit and is not afraid to step into the hole of the RB and makes incredibly good tackles. Ricardo is a big hitter has great field awareness and can play the OLB if he is needed to and that is a great asset to have in a player. Colleges should be watching Ricardo this Summer and Fall because Ricardo will impress.
Landenn Sitzmann- 2022 FS/SS Cabot Panthers
Landenn is a player looking to surprise some people this Fall. He stands at 6’2 and weighs in at 168 pounds. Landenn has great eyes and field awareness. Landenn makes great open field tackles and can spot the ball playing FS very well. He high points the ball as your taught to do and does have great ball hawk potential. Landenn is ready to make his name a known one this Fall, and I believe he will. Colleges should have him on their radar.
Reid Nixon- 2022 CB Greenbrier Panthers
Reid is a special player who plays with a lot of heart and determination. Reid stands at 5’7 inches and weighs in at 140 pounds but plays bigger. In 2020, Reid recorded 4 solo and 5 TT in 7 games. Do not let Reid’s size fool you because he hits hard and loves doing it. He covers well using his speed to close in on any receiver catching the ball making great open field tackles limiting the YAC. Reid can also read the developing play well and quickly reacting to make the stop. Colleges should be watching Reid this Fall.
Kaylon Morris- 2023 FS Springdale Bulldogs
Kaylon is only going to be a Junior in 2021 but he did not Sophomore year like a typical Sophomore might. Kaylon stands at 6’1 and weighs in at 165 pounds. Kaylon runs a 4.7/40 and it shows on film. In 2020, Kaylon recorded 10 solo tackles, 27 TT, .5 TFLs, 1 INT, 3 PD, and 2 FF. Kaylon is set to play big as a Junior and even bigger as a Senior. I am interested in what Kaylon will show us all this Summer and defiantly this fall for the Bulldogs. Colleges should have Kaylon on their list and watch him closely.
