From Davis Mills to Trevor Lawrence to Justin Fields to Harrison Bailey and more, top QBs emerge from the north Georgia area on an annual basis.
Quarterbacks in the area are more than pure pocket passers, and many have shown the ability to beat defense not only with their arm, but with their feet.
So who are some of the fastest QBs in North Georgia? Prep Redzone takes a look…
Malachi Singleton Malachi Singleton 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB North Cobb | 2023 State GA – North Cobb
Arguably the top 2023 quarterback in the state, Singleton is a highly productive QB who has been starting for North Cobb since he was a freshman. The 6-foot-2 215-pounder is an excellent runner and is improving his arm each day. He has good strength and knows how to push the ball down the field, but he’s also accurate underneath and can zip the ball into tight windows. OF course his arm is impressive, but this list is about speed, and that’s exactly what Singleton will bring. Even at 215-pounds, Singleton showed the ability to burst through the line of scrimmage and pull away from slower linebackers and defensive backs. He’s a powerful runner as well who can really take off once he gets rolling. Last fall, Singleton carried the ball 191 times for 1,091 yards and 17 TDs. He played against strong defenses all season, and even as a sophomore, Singleton consistently looked like one of the best athletes on the field. He’s a dynamic playmaker who can beat defense with both his arms and his legs. Singleton’s speed and overall athleticism helped him earn offers from Georgia, Miami, Louisville, UCF, among others.
Gunner Stockton Gunner Stockton 6'1" | 220 lbs | QB Rabun County | 2022 State GA – Rabun County
Stockton may not be a true “speedster”, but he’s still one of the faster QBs in all of North Georgia. The 5-star prospect can run through tackles with ease, but once he gets in the open field, Stockton knows how to take off and out-run the rest of the defense. Even at 6-foot-1 220-pounds, Stockton shows impressive speed that can really keep defenses on their heels. Stockton broke off multiple long TD runs against Prince Avenue early in the season and kept it up for the rest of the fall. As a junior last season, Stockton rushed for an incredible 1,581 yards (13th in the state) and 26 touchdowns (5th in the state). He rushed for at least one touchdown in every game but one, which came in a close loss to Jefferson early in the season. Stockton will likely break the state passing record by the time he graduates, but he’s shown he’s one of the best runners for any QB in Georgia history as well. The North Georgia star will stay home and play football at the University of Georgia.
Javin Whatley: Rockmart
One of the top overall athletes in the Northwest Georgia, Whatley is an outstanding overall athlete who consistently wins games at the Yellow Jacket QB. The 6-foot-0 170-pounder could play a handful of positions at the next level, and a lot of that is due to his size. He might be more of an athlete than a quarterback, but he still makes plenty of throws when he needs too. He’s a better runner than a passer, and that can really disrupt opposing defenses. He’s always one of the fastest and most athletic players on the field and he proved it last season when he rushed for 1,365 yards and 15 touchdowns. He changes directions well, shows great burst, and has a true nose for the end-zone with the ball in his hands. He’s certainly one of the fastest and more explosive quarterbacks in the state.
Xavier Smith – Langston Hughes
One of the fastest overall players in the state, Smith led the Langston Hughes offense last season with 794 yards and 8 TDs. Smith recently ran a personal best 48.97 in the 400m, showing his burst and explosiveness. He has the “extra gear” that most football players just don’t have. He can take off like a jet and shows a natural ability to make defenders miss in the open field. He can leave defenders in the dust and can out-run angles from defensive backs on a consistent basis. He may not light up the stat sheet, but it’s easy to see his speed when you turn on the field. Look for him to run all over defenses once again as a senior this fall.
