Despite the score, both teams put forth a physical effort making it a fun game to watch. The difference in the game was undoubtedly the plethora of turnovers the Southern defense was able to create, starting their offense in the red zone on multiple occasions to get them easy points. Here are three players who stood out to me during the game.
Southern Bulldogs
Jordan Gladwell, 5’9, 170, 2021
Jordan put together an absolutely dominant performance in this game on both sides of the ball. He lived in the backfield as a blitzing middle linebacker, quickly shooting through the A-gap unblocked but keeping enough control to make a play on the ball carrier. By doing this Jordan was able to come away with several TFL’s as well as several sacks, one of which resulting in a forced fumble. In coverage, he did a good job of playing in the middle of the field where was able to come away with an interception followed by a return to put the offense in the red zone. Jordan showed off his physical running style from the full-back position on the offensive side of the ball by shaking off would-be tacklers to gain tough yardage. He was also able to show off his hands and run after the catch ability when he could take a short route into the flats 20 yards into the endzone. In this game, Jordan was able to do it all, making a huge impact on both the defensive and offensive ends of the ball. He is undoubtedly my MVP for this contest.
Joe Hutchison, 5’9, 2022
Joe had himself a huge day from his corner position. Joe played in his zone perfectly all game long, using his eyes to watch the quarterback in order to predict where he wanted to go and the patients to not commit to anything too early. Because of this, he was able to come away with two interceptions where he was able to perfectly jump the route and come away with huge chunks of yardage on the returns. It is important to note that Joe was also able to come away with a pass breakup that was almost a third interception but was dropped. Joe made a massive impact on this game by taking the ball away and setting up his offense for easy scores on multiple occasions. Because of this, he was a big reason for his team coming out with the victory.
Glen Burnie Gophers
Jaden Derry, 5’5, 180, 2021
Despite the loss, Jaden had a very active day from his safety position. He showed off his physical downhill style of play all game, delivering huge hits that energized his entire unit. In the run game, Jaden shined as a run supporter, quickly recognizing run and filling holes created in the front seven to deny would be explosive plays. This was one of the things I liked most about his play in this game. When he filled, he did so physically, creating an intense collision on contact against both ball carriers and lead blockers. His physical play even resulted in him forcing a fumble, giving his team an opportunity to turn the tides in a closer game. Jaden did an excellent job of playing with high energy throughout the game. The way he played should be a perfect example of his team’s energy to bring into the next game.
